Cowboys might be ignoring the free agent signing that makes too much sense

Over the course of this initial free agency wave, the Dallas Cowboys have certainly put most of their attention into adding defensive pieces.

With new defensive coordinator Christian Parker coming in, and Brian Schottenheimer feeling fairly confident about the offense, it only makes sense to pour resources into the other side of the ball.

As the immediate free agency frenzy dies down, the Cowboys are going to have a little more time to plan ahead and strategize. The remaining free agent pool is full of players who likely won't make as much as they had hoped, and that could work to teams' advantages.

One signing the Cowboys could make during this second wave is also one that makes too much sense and, as it so happens, has a slight connection to Dallas' new defensive coordinator.

Von Miller makes too much sense for the Dallas Cowboys not to sign him

Veteran pass rusher Von Miller is still on the open market, and he will likely take his time before making a decision. But, he does share a connection with Parker, when they spent half of the 2021 season together back with the Denver Broncos.

As the story goes, Miller was ultimately traded to the Los Angeles Rams that year, and would go on to win a Super Bowl alongside the fierce Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, among other defensive pieces.

But, Miller did spend some time in that very same building as Parker, who was coaching the Broncos' defensive backs.

In terms of what Miller could offer this Cowboys defense, let's first address the fact that he's not an every-down player at this stage. He is going to turn 37 years old later this month and is 100 percent a rotational pass rusher.

With that said, Miller is still well-worth keeping in a healthy rotational role. Last year with the Washington Commanders, Miller notched 9.0 sacks while playing under 40 percent of snaps.

All things considered, that's a pretty phenomenal showing for the wiley veteran. After his stint with the Buffalo Bills, Miller was almost a forgotten name. And, the Commanders' 2025 campaign was clearly the opposite of how they'd have liked it to go.

Now, Miller could come in and play that Jadeveon Clowney role while seeing those ex-Commanders teammates of his twice in 2026.

The Cowboys still need plenty of help in the pass rush department, even though the recent trade for Rashan Gary gives them another body in that room. They are far from out of the woods, but if Jerry Jones is planning to try and compete with the blistering offense he could be rolling out, he'll need a lot more help on that defense.

Miller's experience and ability to still be an efficient contributor is also more than worth his estimated market value, set under $6 million courtesy of Spotrac.

Six million? Jerry, make it happen.
