Ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, Dallas Cowboys fans got a chance to hear from head coach Brian Schottenheimer and the brass, and as we all know ... they always deliver on the entertainment aspect.
Thanks to some juicy questions from Cowboys media, specifically courtesy of the likes of Nick Harris and Jori Epstein, for example, Jerry Jones gave us some golden nuggets to work with.
One of the overwhelming highlights of their time speaking to the media, though, had to be when asked about the possibility of repeating what the team did back in 2020 when they selected CeeDee Lamb in the first round.
Instead of going defense, what is the likelihood the Cowboys go offense and take a similar route as they did in 2020 with Lamb?
"That's alive and well," Jones started out.
"Given the right circumstances, we’ll go offense even though [there are] more questions on the defensive side of the ball right now."
Take that for whatever it's worth (let's be honest -- sometimes, Jones' words don't mean much of anything at all) but, uh, that certainly sounded like it had George Pickens' name tied to it somehow.
Jerry Jones just gave Dallas Cowboys fans every reason to doubt George Pickens' future
So, if we're reading into Jones' words here, then the Cowboys could very well go with a wide receiver at either pick 12 or 20 overall.
And, that might end up being prime position to get one of either Makai Lemon out of USC or Jordyn Tyson out of Arizona State.
There is a world where the Cowboys are rostering Lamb, Pickens and one of those two rookies.
The obvious question then, becomes, what does Dallas do with Pickens if that happens?
The Cowboys are already committed to having Pickens play on the franchise tag in 2026. Stephen Jones admitted as much during this press conference.
Yes, the Cowboys are essentially calling the Pickens situation a "done deal" and it's only late April. That feels a little ... unwise, should we call it?
Dallas has until mid-summer to get a long-term deal done with Pickens, but they're refusing to negotiate a multiyear contract at this stage. This all seems a little off, to say the least.
But, it's the Cowboys. It's Jerry Jones. When should we ever be surprised?
Just a couple hours before this presser took place, we already heard from Adam Schefter that the Cowboys and Pickens were "nowhere close" on a deal. And now, it all makese sense.
Trading Pickens so soon after acquiring him seems like one of the dumbest moves you could make. Waiting until next year to re-open contract negotiations also seems like a move not worth making.
And yet, we continue to come back to the notion that, it's the Cowboys.
There aren't a lot of words for many things we see and hear from the organization, so let's just file this under that long list of similar scenarios.
