It looked for a second that Brandon Aubrey and the Dallas Cowboys could be headed for a divorce. While negotiations were more difficult than anticipated, the two sides have worked out a deal to make Aubrey the highest-paid kicker in NFL history.
Per Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys and Aubrey agreed to a four-year, $28 million contract that includes $20 million guaranteed. All things considered, $7 million per year is a very fair price for both parties.
Now the NFL's highest-paid picker, Brandon "Butter" Aubrey isn't going anywhere.
The Dallas Cowboys have signed Brandon Aubrey to a record-setting contract extension
Conflicting reports during the NFL Combine claimed that Aubrey's agent, Todd France, demanded $10 million per year after rejecting the Cowboys' offer.
That report was ultimately debunked, but many Cowboys fans were ready to see the team place a second-round tender on Aubrey, which they ultimately did.
That reaction wasn’t a case of being a prisoner of the moment. As great as Aubrey is, paying your kicker more than your starting running back would be awful resource management.
For all of the angst that the Combine caused, there was never any bad blood between Aubrey and Dallas. While Brian Schottenheimer needs to learn not to use Aubrey as a crutch on 3rd downs after the offense crosses midfield, re-signing him was a no-brainer.
Not only does Aubrey have the biggest leg in the NFL, but his ability to deliver in clutch moments is undeniable. If the Cowboys make the playoffs next season, being able to deploy a kicker like Aubrey in tight games is a luxury few teams have.
In just three seasons, Aubrey already holds the record with five field goals of 60 yards or longer. He set two records in Dallas' loss to the Lions this past season, becoming the first player ever to convert three field goals of 55 yards or longer in the same game. It also gave him the record for most made field goals of at least 60 yards in a single season.
The hope is that the Cowboys won't rely on Aubrey as much as they did in 2025. While the offense was among the best in the league, it only ranked 16th with a 56.9 percent touchdown rate in the red zone.
Still, it’s a great feeling to have complete confidence when your kicker trots onto the field.
