Cowboys are clearly laying a trap the Giants may be dumb enough to fall in

The pre-draft smoke might just be a trap

The Dallas Cowboys using a first-round pick on the wide receiver position wouldn't be entirely unexpected, but it feels like the reported interest in Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson has been laid on pretty thick as of late.

The Cowboys have made it clear that wide receiver George Pickens will play this season on the franchise tag, and as a result, some in the NFL media world have pointed out that the team has shown some real interest in Tyson within the last week or so. But what if the Cowboys are setting a trap for a division rival?

The New York Giants have been the team most closely connected with Tyson since his private workout, and we might be seeing the Cowboys playing some chess with these reports and interest leaks.

Dallas Cowboys playing 4-D chess to bait Giants into Jordyn Tyson reach

With the Giants showing so much reported interest in Jordyn Tyson, everyone in the NFL world has been reading the tea leaves and talking about how they could take one of the top-5 players on their board at No. 5 overall, then grab Tyson with the 10th pick they just acquired from the Bengals in the Dexter Lawrence trade.

Here's a scenario that could be plausible...

What if the Cowboys are trying to bait the Giants into overdrafting Tyson with the 5th overall pick? Based on his injury history, that would be a massive reach, but it's not impossible in a draft where all bets appear to be off when it comes to player and positional value early on.

If the Giants wait to take Tyson until the 10th overall pick, it's reasonable that the Cowboys -- knowing their interest -- could jump them with the Chiefs at 9 and steal a target from a division rival.

So Dallas leaks interest in Tyson, the Giants panic and take him 5th overall, then one of either Arvell Reese or Sonny Styles potentially falls to the 6th overall pick. The Cowboys would then be in much better position to move up (and jump over another division rival) to get one of the top defensive players on their board.

And the Ohio State duo of Reese and Styles really represents the only players worth Dallas trading up for in this class. If one of those two guys falls to the 6th overall pick because the Giants panic-drafted Jordyn Tyson 5th overall out of fear someone else would snag him, it would be a huge win for the Cowboys.

Sure, if Tyson fell into the Cowboys' laps, he'd probably be a great pick. But they don't have to fall over themselves trying to get him. The Giants are in a much more desperate situation at the receiver position with Malik Nabers coming off of an injury and Wan'Dale Robinson leaving in free agency.

If the Cowboys are trying to bait the Giants into taking Tyson way too high, it might actually be working.
