If you asked me which offseason addition will have the biggest impact on the Dallas Cowboys in 2026, I wouldn't hesitate to say Caleb Downs. And most people would answer this question the same way. And it's hard to blame them. Dallas got a stud with the 11th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
The 21-year-old is the type of player who can make an immediate impact on the Cowboys' defense. He was the best safety in college football last season, earning the Jim Thorpe Award in the process. There's a reason he was viewed as a generational prospect at the position: his football IQ and production were simply off the charts.
The most intriguing part about Downs' rookie season is that new Cowboys' defensive coordinator Christian Parker, a known DB guru, is planning to play him at nickel cornerback as a rookie. And his versatility to play all over the defense will turn him into one of the most dangerous DBs in the NFL.
Caleb Downs and Cowboys DC Christian Parker are a match made in heaven in Dallas
No one thinks the Downs-Parker marriage will be a bigger success than former Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons. Now retired, Simmons played for Parker in Denver, and said on Jordan Schultz' podcast he has no doubt in his mind the Ohio State product is a perfect fit for what Dallas (and their new DC) needs to thrive.
"I really like that they got (Caleb) Downs," Simmons said. "I think that his versatility and what I know CP wants to run because he comes from that Vic Fangio style, he'll add his own style to it."
The four-time All-Pro brought up two former Fangio/Parker DBs with similar skillsets who are budding stars: Ja'Quan McMillan in Denver and Cooper DeJean (and by proxy Quinyon Mitchell) in Philadelphia. And he expects Downs to be utilized similarly to both of them to begin his career.
McMillan quickly developed into a stud nickel corner for the Broncos, and that was largely because of Parker's influence. And the same thing happened to DeJean with the Eagles, even though he's also lined up at safety. So I'd imagine his usage is more in line with what we should expect from Downs.
Not only did Simmons praise Downs, he heaped praise on his ex-coach. He mentioned that his eye for detail "has to be some of the best I've seen", and that's been proven in his track record. Multiple players he's worked with became stars overnight.
Justin Simmons enjoyed his fair share of success playing for Christian Parker, and with a talent like Caleb Downs set to play that nickel/safety hybrid role for the Cowboys, it's not hard to see this partnership becoming a success story.
