Hello, Oxnard. We missed you.
The Dallas Cowboys will take the field in just a few hours for their first practice of training camp. As such, it will be a limited session, but that takes absolutely nothing away from the excitement. After an offseason that's felt longer due to the lack of noise made by the front office, Cowboys football is finally back.
What exactly is Christian Parker's vision for the defense? Is the backup running back currently on the roster? Can DaRon Bland and DeMarvion Overshown rediscover their star form and be trusted as centerpieces of Parker's defense? These are just some of the most burning questions that will hopefully have answers before the end of camp.

Top lessons learned from Cowboys training camp so far
Takeaway No. 1: The Cowboys are open for business.
- In Dallas' introductory press conference, Jerry Jones revealed that he discussed a "substantive" move with another team as recently as Monday (July 27). Jones was adamant that he's willing to give up future draft picks for an impact player. A trade may not be on the horizon, but Dallas is seemingly looking to make a splash on defense.
Read more on how Jerry Jones dropped two bombshells in one presser.
Takeaway No. 2: Jaishawn Barham looks legit
- Don't take it from me. Brian Schottenheimer singled out Barham as a standout from the early stages of camp. The Cowboys' head coach applauded Barham's ability to "shed blocks" and called him a "heavy hand", underscoring the force he hits blockers with on first contact. You love to hear that about any rookie, let alone a third-round pick.
Read more on how the Cowboys are already seeing why they targeted Jaishawn Barham.
Takeaway No. 3: Caleb Downs is setting the tone
- Downs hasn't made any jaw-dropping plays, but he's been a model of consistency. His first standout moment came in Monday's first padded practice when he blew up a carry to Jaydon Blue. In the previous practice, Downs sparked the first dustup of camp when he knocked the ball out of Brevyn Spann-Ford's hands after the whistle. The No. 11 overall pick is being a pest, and we mean that as a compliment.

Takeaway No. 4: Otito Ogbonnia is showing his worth
Ogbonnia is an old-school nose tackle. His impact doesn't show up in the box score, but he does so much thankless work in the trenches that's difficult to notice in real time. Between stopping a handoff in its tracks and even chasing down screen passes, Ogbonnia is doing a little of everything.

Takeaway No. 5: Dallas' defense has real potential
Remember how helpless the Cowboys' defense was in last summer's joint practice against the LA Rams? They were noncompetitive, which looks even worse when you recall that Matthew Stafford didn't even play. Matt Eberflus' group got diced up by Jimmy Garoppolo. This year was a much different story, as Christian Parker's unit puched back and arguably won the day.

Injury updates
Tuesday, July 28
If you can believe it, the Cowboys are fully healthy to start training camp. DaRon Bland (foot) and Donovan Ezeiruaku (hip) underwent surgeries this offseason and did not participate in OTAs or minicamp. They'll need a ramp-up period for the time they've missed, but they're good to go.
Dallas did not place a single player on the physically unable to perform list or the non-football injury list. That includes safety Jalen Thompson, who missed some of minicamp with a pectoral issue.
Wednesday, July 29
Veteran safety P.J. Locke was seen limping off the field and headed to the medical tent for further evaluation of a reported knee injury. Locke is expected to play a key role on both defense and special teams. Hopefully, it's nothing serious.
Thursday, July 30
Tests came back clean on Locke's knee, per Brian Schottenheimer, who said Locke suffered a hyperextension and that the injury is "nothing significant." He won't practice for a few days, but Dallas caught a break.
Saturday, August 1
Four players were held out of Saturday's practice. The Cowboys don't appear overly concerned, but it's still something to monitor: P.J. Locke (knee), Jalen Thompson (hip), Zion Childress (hamstring).
Monday, August 3
Tight end Princeton Fant was carted off with a knee injury following a collision on a run play. He'll undergo an MRI to determine the severity. A valued depth piece who can play on special teams, Fant has managed to stick around the franchise for three seasons as a former undrafted free agent.
Tuesday, August 4
- Princeton Fant’s MRI confirmed a torn ACL; he’ll miss the rest of the season
- Safety Alijah Clark, having an impressive camp, left Tuesday’s practice with a lower leg injury.. It looked like Clark’s ankle got rolled up in coverage as he was tracking a deep ball.
- P.J. Locke returned to practice are sitting out a few days with a hyperextended knee
- Jalen Thompson (hip) and Zion Childress (hamstring) remained sidelined, though there’s no concern that either injury is serious.
Thursday, August 6
- Jaishawn Barham left practice with a groin injury, though the Cowboys don’t believe it’s serious. He may miss the next couple of practices, but it doesn’t appear to be a long-term injury.
Latest practice updates
Wednesday, July 29
- Jaydon Blue ripped a long touchdown run after Phil Mafah subbed out following a fumble. Rashan Gary executed a perfect punch-out, and Caleb Downs recovered the loose football. Speaking of the Cowboys' hyped rookie …
- Caleb Downs played everywhere, including the nickel, near the edge, and as a deep safety.
- George Pickens did George Pickens things, taking his first reception of camp to the end zone. It should be noted that players were not in pads, but Pickens looked spry and motivated.
- Joe Milton drew first blood in the Cowboys’ QB2 battle, firing a strike to Jonathan Mingo on a deep crossing route.
Thursday, July 30
- Javonte Williams opened practice with a big gain on a screen play with Tyler Booker as his lead blocker. Involving Williams in the passing game would give this offense one dimension it didn’t have last season.
- Dak Prescott had a surgical day under center, culminating in a beautiful over-the-shoulder throw to George Pickens up the sideline that he dropped into a bucket. QB1 looks primed for another monster year.
- After losing a fumble on Day 1, Phil Mafah responded strongly. He bounced one run off the tackle and went untouched some 50 yards to the end zone. Fumbling wasn't an issue for him at Clemson. As long as he protects the football, he'll be in the RB2 battle right to the end.
- Shavon Revel had an elite rep in man coverage against George Pickens, running stride for stride with Pickens on a go route that fell incomplete.
Saturday, August 1
- Malik Hooker came down with the first interception of camp, corralling a tipped pass from Dak Prescott that appeared to deflect off Jaydon Blue’s hands.
- Undrafted wide receiver Camden Brown is making an early impression. That culminated on Saturday with a nifty one-handed grab in the corner of the end zone.
- The battle of All-Pros: Quinnen Williams got the better of Tyler Smith on a couple of reps, but Smith won his fair share as well. Iron sharpening iron.
- Undrafted tight end Michael Trigg hauled in his first touchdown.
- Shavon Revel has yet to make any splash plays, but he’s applied sticky coverage on most of his reps against George Pickens. He looks the part in man coverage.
Monday, August 3
- DeMarvion Overshown was clearly amped for the first padded practice, as he trucked Hunter Luepke to help blow up a toss play to Jaydon Blue. Overshown’s hit forced Blue to cut back, where he was met by multiple Cowboys defenders.
- Cobie Durant recorded a pass breakup on CeeDee Lamb early in practice before intercepting Dak Prescott on another throw intended for Lamb.
- If you couldn’t tell, the defense won the day. Shavon Revel recorded three pass breakups in coverage, including one on a George Pickens jump ball in the end zone. The second-year CB looks full of confidence after an injury-riddled rookie season.
- It was an off day for the offense, but Ryan Flournoy and Jake Ferguson both made highlight-reel grabs in traffic in the end zone.
Tuesday, August 4
- Donovan Ezeiruaku got the boot from practice after throwing a punch at Terence Steele. Brian Schottenheimer’s no-fighting policy is still being enforced, which is why Ezeiruaku headed for an early shower.
- Dak Prescott and Jake Ferguson were dialed. The duo connected on several passes, including a gorgeous seam ball that Prescott placed perfectly.
- Sam Williams absolutely embarrassed rookie tackle Drew Shelton in one-on-one drills. As encouraging as it was to see Williams not rush to contact, it’s clear that Shelton isn’t quite ready to play with the big boys just yet.
- UDFA Michael Trigg had his most active practice, which included a tough catch in traffic. Trigg knew he was going to take a hit, but still came down with the ball. Expect him to get more looks now that Princeton Fant is out for the season.
Thursday, August 6
- DaRon Bland had an excellent day in coverage, getting his hand on passes intended for Jonathan Mingo and George Pickens.
- Tyler Guyton (elbow) and DeMarvion Overshown (leg soreness) were both full participants after being limited on Tuesday. A sign that the Cowboys are just being smart with their projected starting left tackle and MIKE linebacker.
- KaVontae Turpin had arguably his most noticeable impact in the passing game, getting involved on both gadget plays and downfield passes.
- Cornerback Ameer Speed is starting to generate some buzz. He intercepted a deep ball during 1-on-1s (h/t Jon Machota, The Athletic) and later forced a fumble in team drills.
Saturday, August 8
- It’s taken a minute (which was expected), but first-round pick Malachi Lawrence is starting to feel comfortable. He had a would-be sack against the starting offense and got his hands on a pass in team drills.
- Is it too early to call undrafted wide receiver Camden Brown this year’s Oxnard darling? The Georgia Southern product has made a handful of acrobatic catches, and that continued Saturday on an athletic grab in the corner of the end zone.
- Standout left guard Tyler Smith has been limited in team drills. The Cowboys clarified that, saying that they’re just managing the reps of a player who’s played a lot of football. He hasn’t missed a practice or any time in 11-on-11s.
Sunday, August 9
- In what many are calling the best practice of camp, the offense and defense traded blows. However, the nod may go to the defense, as Dak Prescott finished 7-of-17 in team drills, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. Consider that another feather in Christian Parker’s cap.
- Fitting that the “best” practice of camp produced perhaps the best play of camp. Caleb Downs won a 1-on-1 rep against CeeDee Lamb in the end zone. Downs fought through a George Pickens pick and threw up his hands just as Lamb went up for the catch. It was a thing of beauty, showing once again that Dallas has a special player on its hands.
- Safety Julius Wood has been everywhere in camp. He barely missed an interception on a tipped pass, but picked off Joe Milton two plays later. The Cowboys’ safety room is stacked, but they’ll have a hard time leaving Wood off the 53-man roster
Tuesday, August 11 (Joint practice vs. the Rams)
- Defense, defense, defense.
- Second-year linebacker Justin Barron had three interceptions. Nothing more needs to be said about that.
- Shavon Revel forced a fumble on a Rams running back and recorded two pass breakups in coverage, including a near interception on a pass intended for Puka Nacua in the end zone.
- Donovan Ezeiruaku helped set the tone with an early sack, and Quinnen Williams was unblockable along the interior. Even Isaiah Land had a sack in team drills while working with the first team defense.
- In addition to Barron, DeMarvion Overshown and Dee Winters had lively practices at linebacker, with both players making stops against the run and pass.
What Brian Schottenheimer is saying
Tuesday, July 28
Schottenheimer clarified that Tyler Smith will start at left guard, but will also see snaps at left tackle. The Cowboys' head coach compared it to right guard Tyler Booker taking occasional reps at center. The team has said that Nate Thomas and Drew Shelton will compete at LT, but Tyler Smith clearly is the preferred option if Tyler Guyton struggles or gets hurt.
Wednesday, July 29
Schottenheimer praised how locked in George Pickens is. For now, there doesn't seem to be any contract drama in the forecast.
"George Pickens is as dialed into meetings as I've seen since he's been here," Schottenheimer said. "You're gonna see a very motivated George Pickens this season. That's great news for us and bad news for the rest of the league."
Schottenheimer also outlined where Tyler Guyton has the most room to grow. The Cowboys are making the 2024 first-round pick earn the left tackle job this summer.
"Fundamentals. He’s one of the most talented athletes I have ever been around at LT: the feet, ability to move, the size. But it’s a process, and when you’re in and out of the lineup, it’s hard to find that consistency."
Thursday, July 30
Schottenheimer took a moment to praise DeMarvion Overshown. Per Schotty, Christian Parker pretended his headset went out during a play to see how Overshown would react. The deception was pre-planned by Parker and Schotty, and Overshown aced the test.
"D-Mo got to the exact call that he was supposed to, which is what you expect. D-Mo was outstanding in getting us to the call we needed to be in," Schottenheimer said.
Thursday, August 6
It's still undecided whether Christian Parker will call the defense from the sideline or the coaching booth. It will be his call, but Brian Schottenheimer said, "In a perfect world, he'll be down (on the sideline)." Schottenheimer added that Parker will most likely experiment on the sideline and in the booth during the preseason.
What Dak Prescott is saying
Thursday, July 30
Prescott was asked about the message he's trying to send by showing up to camp in a Super Bowl XXX title shirt. The 33-year-old is leaning all the way into the lofty expectations that are following the Cowboys.
"A lot of things in my life, you know, I said I'd do, and I did it. And so like, why shy away from that now?"
Thursday, August 6
Prescott can't speak highly enough about Christian Parker. Cowboys fans have plenty of reasons to feel good about the direction of the defense, but QB1 provided another (h/t Tommy Yarrish, Dallas Cowboys.com).
"The men that we have and the way that we approach and attack their job, I can't talk about CP enough and the pride that he carries with his job. ... He can't be out there making the plays, but there's not one ounce of him that doesn't think he's making plays. And he is."
