The Dallas Cowboys need to overturn every stone as they try to find some new cornerbacks that can give this team a bit of pep in their step, and the trade market could be one way to bring in a player with the benefit of youth in his side looking for someone who is going to roll the dice on him.
The hated San Francisco 49ers have one of those players on their roster in cornerback Renardo Green. Two years after being drafted, Green has gone from a locked-in starter to a rehabilitation project in need of a boost.
ESPN's Ben Solak put the possibility of Green getting traded at 80 percent, and he put the Cowboys right at the top of the list of possible teams that could acquire him in a trade. If Jerry Jones is in a trading mood, Green can be acquired for likely pennies on the dollar.
Renardo Green listed as Dallas Cowboys trade target after down year with 49ers
Green was picked in the second round out of Florida State in 2024, and he has started 21 games in the last two years. However, he hasn't been the best fit in San Francisco's defense, as he graded out as just the 92nd-best cornerback out of 114 in the eyes of Pro Football Focus.
According to Solak, Green fell put of favor in San Francisco due to "mental lapses and unnecessary aggressiveness last season" that eroded his goodwill within the organization. The fact he was struggling under a great coordinator like Robert Saleh should speak volumes about his performance last year.
However, the Cowboys are being coordinated by a new hire in Christian Parker who has earned a reputation as a master developer of defensive backs. Look no further than what happened with Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean early in their careers with Philadelphia.
Green could be a cheaper alternative to many of the top cornerbacks on the market. If Dallas wants to pinch pennies on defense after franchise-tagging George Pickens and potentially working out a new contract with Quinnen Williams, Green could very easily be at the forefront of their list of potential targets.
Green would be yet another reclamation project for this secondary. While names like Kaiir Elam have failed, Jones and Will McClay are likely not going to stop rolling the dice on former top picks who could try to get their careers back on track somewhere else.
