Cowboys targeting 'really explosive' WR to play opposite CeeDee Lamb

America's Team has only added one wide receiver this offseason.

While the Dallas Cowboys have added 10 new players to the roster this offseason, eight in free agency and two via trade, just one of these fresh faces is a wide receiver, that being Parris Campbell.

It's a decent enough depth play, but with all due respect to the six-year veteran, adding a guy who's only caught more than 20 passes once in those six years can't be what most Cowboys fans had in mind when the market opened last month.

Not with the number of high-profile pass catchers who were available and the ample amount of salary cap space the franchise created by restructuring the contracts of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.

Since we already used the phrase "decent enough" to describe the Campbell acquisition, we'll stick with that same term to describe the others who currently reside in the Cowboys' receiver room not named CeeDee Lamb, a list that includes Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin, Ryan Flournoy, Jonathan Mingo, Jalen Brooks, and Campbell.

Jalen Moreno-Cropper, Kelvin Harmon, and Seth Williams are technically on the team as well, but not one of the three caught a single regular-season pass for America's Team last year. And as I'm sure you've figured out by now, tight ends aren't part of this particular conversation.

Of the names listed above who don't wear No. 88, Tolbert was the only one to surpass the 500-yard mark in 2024, setting career highs in receptions (49), receiving yards (610), and touchdowns (seven).

But while the 26-year-old has the potential to be a true WR2, he's not there quite yet, which is why COO and co-owner Stephen Jones says Dallas is still looking to add another wideout.

Stephen Jones says the Cowboys are looking for another WR "to upgrade us"

Speaking during the NFL Annual League Meeting, Jones discussed how much he likes the Cowboys' current receiver room but also said the team is "still open to looking at a really explosive number two that could upgrade us."

Now, it's obvious Dallas can still add a new wideout in the upcoming draft. And many pundits believe the Cowboys will use the 12th overall selection to do just that.

But Jones also says that signing another free agent and exploring a trade are both options that are still on the table. Some may take that with a grain of salt, as Stephen's father, Jerry Jones, has gotten Cowboys fans' hopes up for years with similar talk, only to leave them disappointed.

Nevertheless, one has to wonder if the younger Jones has someone specific in mind.

Former Cowboys Amari Cooper is still available, but the 30-year-old may not fit the "explosive" description anymore. The same could probably be said for 32-year-old Keenan Allen and 32-year-old Tyler Lockett, both of whom are still on the market.

Diontae Johnson, who'll be 29 when the 2025 season begins, is still out there as well, but his production has dipped off something fierce since his Pro Bowl campaign with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021.

DJ Chark and Elijah Moore are speedy (and cheaper) options, but Tolbert is probably superior to both at this point. That said, though, it would be interesting to see what Moore could do with a team not named the New York Jets or Cleveland Browns.

As far as trades go, there have been several rumors surrounding Tyreek Hill, but that's unlikely to happen for several reasons. A 1-2 punch of Lamb and Hill, though, would undoubtedly be entertaining.

But even beyond Hill, there are options available if Dallas genuinely wants to go that route, and more may come up as the draft inches closer.

As it goes with the Cowboys, we'll just have to wait and see if any action follows a member of the Jones family talking.
