Cowboys starter appearing on "make or break" list shows Dallas is taking huge risk

[nervous laughter] I'm sure it'll be fine.

I don't mean to kill the ... strangely kinda good? ... vibes floating around the Dallas Cowboys right now – especially right before the 'long' summer break – so if you hate this, remember: get mad at the NFL. That should be easy enough?

This week, the NFL took a look around the league and decided, apparently, that not enough fans were panicking. They saw everyone's long weekends and summer plans and thought that it'd be cool to take a sledgehammer to all of it. How? Great question.

By publishing a list of 'make-or-break' candidates who are 'at a crossroads' in 2025. It's all very dramatic. A ton of the usual suspects – Justin Fields, Sam Darnold, Treylon Burks, etc – are on there, which is fine. It makes sense.

But what ISN'T fine, and what DOESN'T make sense, is the inclusion of a Cowboys player on said list. The audacity is staggering. Buried in the last of players who coughcough probably aren't good coughcough is projected new starting running back Javonte Williams. It's a very depressing read that has no business invading your weekend if you don't want it to. Just saying, you've been warned.

Javonte Williams' Cowboys career is already off to an inauspicious start

"Williams fizzled out in Denver and ended up accepting a one-year, $3 million deal to headline Dallas' underwhelming backfield. The sizzle he once brought to the Broncos faded before 2024, but he has a rare opportunity to regain it for a Cowboys team that should boast some offensive firepower, with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens at receiver. If Williams is going to command a starting job anywhere in the NFL from here on out, it must begin in Dallas."

Fizzle?! Fading?! Doesn't NFL.com know that this is the Dallas Cowboys they're referencing? Jerry Jones has worked very hard over the last few decades to make sure that no one in a Cowboys uniform ever fizzles or fades. That's kinda their whole thing.

It's also especially bleak because, as the headline suggests, Williams is the Cowboys' starting running back. Like, no offense to Miles Sanders or Jaydon Blue, but if Williams has a terrible year, that probably means the Cowboys have one of the worst run games in the NFL.

That's something I do not want any to think about for one moment between now and the moment we absolutely have to, so I simply won't. Plus, if you don't scroll all the way to the bottom of the list, it's like Williams isn't even on it! And now the vibes are back.
