The Dallas Cowboys hosted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night as 9.5-point favorites. Despite many expecting the Cowboys to handle business against a Bucs team that was 0-4 entering the game, that wasn't the case, as they lost 24-16.
The offense never seemed to get it going in this contest, but the defense was a massive letdown. Defensive coordinator Christian Parker was supposed to elevate his side of the ball, and it has yet to happen.
The defense looked outmatched against the Bucs in a game that was started by Jalon Daniels, who was signed in April as an undrafted free agent. From penalties to the lack of a run defense, there are several issues with Dallas' defense, putting Parker in the limelight once again.
Christian Parker is at the center of the Cowboys' biggest concern
Dallas' offense opened the game with a nine-play, 70-yard drive that gave them a 7-0 lead. It looked like it was going to be a great outing for them, but the defense came out and laid an egg immediately.
Daniels orchestrated a 15-play, 73-yard TD drive for Tampa Bay. The drive took a whopping 10:53 off the clock, which is the second-longest drive in the NFL this season.
Not only couldn't the defense get off the field, DaRon Bland, Shavon Revel, and Rashan Gary all committed penalties that extended the drives.
While they only allowed seven points in the first half, they gave up 155 total yards and allowed the Bucs to go 4-for-7 on third down. And they came out in the second half and immediately dropped the ball. Bucky Irving opened up the Bucs' drive with a 72-yard run. On the next play, Emeka Egbuka scored a 14-yard touchdown on an end around.
Dak Prescott proceeded to throw an interception on Dallas next offensive possession on a pass that Ryan Flournoy dropped, forcing this defense to step back on the field. Tampa Bay's offense came right back out and moved the ball on this defense.
DaRon Bland was in man coverage, where he fell down, allowing Tez Johnson to make a catch and run for 64 yards. Dallas' bend, don't break defense couldn't hold up once again, as Irving scored from one yard out.
Throughout this affair, the Cowboys struggled to get off the field. They allowed Tampa Bay to have four drives that lasted at least four minutes, as the Bucs won the time of possession 39:21 to 20:39. The Bucs also finished 7-of-13 on third down.
Having this sort of performance was unacceptable. Going into the contest, Dallas ranked 30th in total defense (389.5), 24th in pass offense (239.3), 31st in run defense (150.3), and 28th in scoring defense (28).
Christian Parker is running out of time to prove himself
In a game they should have been able to handle, they dropped the ball. Dallas gave up 419 total yards, with a staggering 241 rushing yards. Tampa Bay moved the ball at will on the ground, averaging 6.2 yards per carry. They also allowed Daniels to go 19-of-25 for 189 yards and one touchdown in just his second career start.
Dallas had a winless team with a rookie quarterback coming into their building on a short week, but they didn't seem prepared. While the offense had its problems, this was a pitiful performance from the defense. This should have been a game where they made their impact and shut down Tampa Bay, yet it was the complete opposite.
The entire offseason, it was discussed that Parker was going to come in and help flip things around. They made several additions, but it's still clear that the defense is a weak point for this team.
They can't stop the run for their lives, as they allowed 165-plus rushing yards in four of the five games in 2026. Bland and Revel both had their issues, magnifying the absence of newly acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who was ruled out hours before kickoff due to an illness.
This group also can't create any pressure and is tied for 31st in the NFL in team sacks (4). The results were the same once again, as they didn't log a sack in the loss.
The Cowboys' offense had an off game, but they have shown they can be one of the best units in the league. As for the defense, it's a major concern once again. Dallas needs Parker to get answers and find them quickly, as patience with this defense is beginning to wear thin.
