Cowboys must look to this AFC juggernaut for their next defensive coordinator

It's obvious.

The Dallas Cowboys are allowing 30 points per game and are now 6-7-1 on the season after their second loss in a row. Dallas should have been able to beat the Lions and Vikings, as they scored 30 and 26 points in those games, but the bottom-feeding defense has obviously been to blame.

It would take quite a miracle for the Cowboys to win out and make the playoffs in the 2025 NFL Season, but they still have a shot. Even if Dallas' defense was average, the Cowboys would likely be flirting with double-digit wins right now.

Well, if the season ends the way it's expected to end, the Cowboys will likely part ways with Matt Eberflus, the team's defensive coordinator who has come under fire more than a plethora of times this year. The unit has held opponents under 20 points just once this year and have allowed opponents to score at least 40 points three times.

For the future, the Cowboys should look to this AFC juggernaut to fix their defensive issues.

The Denver Broncos could have the Dallas Cowboys' future defensive coordinator

For multiple years now, the Denver Broncos have fielded some of the best defenses in the NFL, and that is putting it lightly. Their defensive coordinator is Vance Joseph, someone who is in line for a head coaching job this cycle.

The Cowboys are obviously not going to be able to get Joseph as the DC, but two coaches on the defensive staff that stick out are Jim Leonhard and Jamar Cain. Leonhard played in the NFL and is currently the defensive pass game coordinator and an assistant head coach for Denver.

Leonhard is an up-and-coming coach who should get DC interviews this offseason. He actually had a short stint at the collegiate level at Wisconsin as an interim head coach and their defensive coordinator from 2017-2022 before making the jump to the NFL in 2024.

If the Cowboys want to dig a bit deeper and take a bit of a bigger risk, they could look to Jamar Cain, who is currently the defensive line coach for the Denver Broncos. He has been in that role since 2024 and was a pass-rush specialist for the Broncos back in 2023.

As most across the league can see, Denver's defensive line and pass rush have been, arguably, the best in the NFL since the start of the 2024 NFL Season, and Cain has his hands all over that unit and could be a fun hire.

What could end up happening, though, is the Cowboys end up hiring someone who has previous defensive coordinator experience, which is not a bad idea, but if the team wanted to take from an AFC juggernaut, the Broncos would be a wise place to look.
