Dallas Cowboys fans are used to a rollercoaster ride and that's exactly what this season has felt like. Even before it started, the season got off to a climb with the bombshell Micah Parsons trade.
Between all of the ups and downs this Cowboys team has endured this year, though, has been a common thread on the defensive side of the ball: Matt Eberflus. Cowboys fans didn't take long to grow tired of Flus, and there isn't a single one who, in their right mind, would think he has a job in Dallas after this year.
That's why it isn't surprising to learn that the Cowboys might already be eyeing Eberflus' replacement. Per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, league sources have noted the Cowboys are in play for Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores.
As Florio explained, teams are getting set to pay up for his services as a defensive coordinator. While some might assume he'd be in the mix for head coach vacancies, Flores is clearly best cut out with the position he's in now -- but it could come with a raise and change of scenery.
Mike Florio believes the Cowboys are in line to pursue Brian Flores as defensive coordinator
Again, Eberflus isn't even gone yet. But, the Cowboys aren't going to keep him around. It is inevitable.
"Dallas seems to be destined to fire defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, after a disastrous reunion year ... And the increasing chatter in league circles is that the Cowboys will be firmly in play for Flores," Florio wrote.
Flores' contract is set to expire after this season, and with the Vikings not in play for the postseason, those talks could happen sooner than later. The Cowboys, obviously, are also eliminated from postseason contention.
So, will Dallas get in on the talks? Will they dabble between the line of tampering and waiting until it's legal?
"The Vikings, we’re told, are keenly aware of the possibility. And while the Vikings should have exclusive rights to negotiate with Flores until his contract expires, we all know by now that tampering is as rampant in pro football as flopping mouthpieces that never seem to make their way into players’ mouths," Florio went on.
It sounds like this could be a situation that gets very interesting, and quickly. The Cowboys aren't the only team who will be looking for a new defensive coordinator. Take the Las Vegas Raiders or Tennessee Titans, for example, who will both very likely have completely-new staffs next season.
There should be more than just a couple in the mix for Flores if he chooses to test the waters after initial negotiations with Minnesota.
Known for his fierce blitz packages and a scheme that confuses even the best offensive minds, Flores will be a hot commodity. And, like Flores asked in his report, will Jerry Jones be willing to pay up?
We shall see.
