The Dallas Cowboys have made the most impactful trade acquisition possible to fix their beaten-up and lackluster defense, acquiring standout cornerback Joey Porter Jr. after a very long contract standoff with the Pittsburgh Steelers, per Tom Pelissero.

According to Jane Slater, Porter will be going to Dallas for a second-round pick in 2028 and a conditional sixth-round pick in 2027. This deal gives Pittsburgh what could end up being a Top 50 pick for a player they were not going to keep long-term, while the Cowboys land the impact star they needed in exchange for a pick that may have been used on a cornerback anyway.

Porter is not a perfect player, but Christian Parker needed some defensive backs with a higher ceiling than the crew he had before this deal was made. The Cowboys' defense may finally go from bad to very good when Porter puts the star on the side of this helmet. Jerry Jones is going all out to get this team in playoff position.

Porter has picked off just three passes in his first three seasons, but ball skills aren't the main reason he has become such a treasured asset. Porter has broken up 31 passes in his career, showing that he is one of the better pure coverage cornerbacks in the game. At 6-2 with great length, Porter is what every defensive coordinator dreams about.

Dallas will likely be expected to give Porter a contract extension, as that was the main reason he sat out the first three games of the 2026 campaign. That deal will likely be in excess of $30 million per season, making him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the game. Jerry Jones is going all-in on yet another Steeler after George Pickens broke out in Dallas.

The Dallas Cowboys will get some use out of Joey Porter Jr.

Porter will immediately start on a Cowboys defense that has Cobie Durant, Shavon Revel, and DaRon Bland playing a heavy diet of snaps. Not only is Porter going to give a thin secondary a boost, but he still has his best football in the windshield rather than the rearview mirror.

However, Porter primarily thrives when he is allowed to play man coverage, and Parker has employed a zone-heavy scheme. Will Parker adjust his defense to accommodate Porter, or do the Cowboys think he will fit in well on their defense?

Regardless, the Cowboys have made yet another win-now move that was meant to improve their lackluster defense. If Porter fits in well with Parker's new scheme, he could be the best cornerback Dallas has seen since Trevon Diggs' breakout season early in his career.
