Losing DaRon Bland for Week 2 with a foot injury was not ideal, but a lot of Dallas Cowboys fans thought that if there was ever a game for Bland to miss, it's probably against the Giants. However, it didn't take long for that logic to get tossed out the window.
Even though Russell Wilson only led New York to six points in Week 1, he's feasting on the Cowboys' secondary. Trevon Diggs specifically is getting picked on. Matched up against star second-year receiver Malik Nabers, Diggs has looked a step slow in coverage, culminating in allowing a 29-yard touchdown to Nabers in the second quarter.
While Diggs has plenty of time time to flip the script, Jerry Jones is getting the last laugh so far for fining his star cornerback $500,000 in the offseason for rehabbing away from the team.
Cowboys' Trevon Diggs is proving Jerry Jones right after $500k fine
Diggs has a $500,000 de-escalator in his contract that requires him to participate in 84.375% of the offseason program. Because the former All-Pro chose to rehab in Miami during OTAs and minicamp, Jerry Jones enforced the de-escalator. When explaining the decision, both Jerry and Stephen Jones criticized Diggs' lack of leadership, saying he's being paid to set the tone for others.
Diggs deserves huge credit for even being cleared to play in Week 1. He's still not playing a full complement of snaps since he missed a chunk of training camp, but it was initially feared that he would miss a handful of games to start the season.
There's definitely something to be said about that. And while no cornerback this side of Patrick Surtain is capable of completely neutralizing Nabers, Diggs is getting paid to limit his production. So far, it hasn't been a contest, which is what Cowboys fans feared would happen against A.J. Brown last week.
For whatever reason, the Eagles didn't test Diggs' knee. This week, Nabers is running past the 26-year-old with ease. Before the touchdown, he blew past Diggs for another long gain up the sideline.
The question now is whether Diggs is still getting his legs underneath him following another knee surgery, or if this is who the player he is now after two surgeries to the same knee.
Regardless, Jones looks pretty vindicated.
