Whether a team avoids a devastating injury is often a key measuring stick for a successful training camp.

The Dallas Cowboys have managed to avoid that so far, though they did endure a scare to starting right tackle Terence Steele. Steele was diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain, but he was surprisingly back at practice on Sunday, albeit in a limited capacity.

That is a great sign, but the injury bug struck again on Sunday when breakout tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford went down with an apparent leg injury after getting rolled up on a run play.

Spann-Ford needed assistance as he limped to the tent for further evaluation, per Joseph Hoyt of the Dallas Morning News. Hoyt added that Spann-Ford walked out of the medical tent under his own power.

It is an ankle injury for Spann-Ford, per Bryan Broaddus of 105.3 The Fan. He will undergo an MRI to determine the severity, so it seems he will be sidelined for a little bit.

This is a brutal development for Spann-Ford. The Cowboys' coaching staff has raved about his development over the offseason. He was a standout in OTAs and minicamp and carried that momentum into Oxnard, where he has been all the rage among team reporters.

Spann-Ford made an impressive leaping touchdown grab on a pass from Joe Milton during two-minute drills on Saturday.

Overall, the 25-year-old has looked much smoother as a pass-catcher. That was his biggest knock coming out of Minnesota last year and he made it a point to improve that aspect of his game following his rookie year. He's making catches in traffic and attacking the ball in the air.

Many analysts think Spann-Ford was trending toward leapfrogging Luke Schoonmaker for the second TE spot behind Jake Ferguson, if he hadn't already. At 6'7" and 250 pounds, Spann-Ford has ideal the size to help the run game and become a red zone weapon for Dak Prescott.

It would be a shame if this injury cost him to miss a lot of time. He is very clearly headed for an expanded role in his second season. Outside of backup quarterback Joe Milton, there may not be anyone on the roster fans are more excited to see in preseason than the young tight end.

Let's hope he is able to get back on the field soon.
