The Dallas Cowboys won't get to extend their winning streak over Brian Daboll after the New York Giants fired him on Monday. The Cowboys were 7-0 against Daboll over his three years at the helm, but Sunday's fourth-quarter collapse was enough for the Giants to send him packing.

Cowboys fans have to hope that New York stays away from offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, who's quietly established himself as one of the smartest minds in the NFL. They will also have to hope that the Giants absolutely botch who they hire to replace Daboll.

Well, the chances of that happening are pretty high after the team confirmed that general manager Joe Schoen will lead that search, owner John Mara confirmed on Monday.

"We feel like Joe has assembled a good young nucleus of talent, and we look forward to its development," said Mara. "Unfortunately, the results over the past three years have not been what any of us want. We take full responsibility for those results and look forward to the kind of success our fans expect."

Giants keeping GM Joe Schoen is great news for Cowboys fans

It's always easier to scapegoat a head coach, but it's pretty remarkable that Schoen has kept his job amidst a pretty dreadful GM stint. It's possible that Mara reverses course and fires Schoen after the season if New York's tailspin continues, but he seems committed to Schoen.

The Giants could've knocked out two birds with one stone. In light of Mara's statement, it would likely take a special circumstance for Schoen to lose his job.

That is great news for the Cowboys.

For starters, Schoen didn't even bang the table for quarterback Jaxson Dart during the draft. Dart was Daboll's guy through and through. Schoen should not be given credit for finding the Giants' next franchise QB.

Dart notwithstanding, Schoen has made some dreadful moves. The offensive line has been a disaster throughout his tenure despite repeated investments to fix it. Like the Cowboys, the Giants essentially torched their 2023 draft. Their first three picks -- Deonte Banks, John Michael Schmitz, and Jalin Hyatt -- have all busted. And the 2024 class, which looked promising at first, now seems to have just one keeper in Malik Nabers.

That brings us to Schoen's free agency blunders, which include not signing Saquon Barkley, who went on to lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl win. Schoen also let star safety Xavier McKinney leave, only for him to morph into a superstar with the Packers. And don't even get us started on Daniel Jones suddenly looking like a competent quarterback with the Colts.

The Giants are definitely trending up thanks to Dart's rapid rise, but they will be held back for however long Schoen is pulling the strings of the roster. Cowboys fans should be rooting for Mara to stick to his word about Schoen keeping his job.
