Cowboys fans can see right through Saquon Barkley's postgame praise of Jalen Hurts

This quote does not pass the smell test.

The fat lady might be tuning up her vocal cords, but she has not started singing.

That's right, the Dallas Cowboys have lived to survive another week after the Philadelphia Eagles melted down to a Los Angeles Chargers team that had Justin Herbert, a week removed from undergoing a procedure on his non-throwing hand, operating at 50 percent capacity.

Jalen Hurts, so often compared and put above Dak Prescott in the quarterback hierarchy, committed five turnovers, including an interception and a fumble on the same play in the first half. While Eagles fans have all but turned on Hurts, he still has the support of the locker room.

That said, it's pretty easy to see right through Saquon Barkley's postgame quote about his struggling quarterback.

“High,” Barkley said of his confidence in Hurts. “I don’t know what the numbers were. In my opinion, when we got the ball back in overtime, and I got Jalen Hurts as my quarterback, I got all the confidence we’re going to win the football game. Sometimes, it doesn’t work. …This doesn’t change anything."

Eagles' locker room scrambling to defend Jalen Hurts is glorious content for Cowboys fans

Barkley is admittedly an outstanding teammate. He was never going to throw Hurts under the bus. Still, it felt like he went above and beyond with his praise of Hurts, and did so pretty intentionally.

While Hurts is the epitome of a winner, he's playing the worst ball of his career. Nobody watching that game had a shred of confidence when he dropped back to pass, let alone that Philadelphia would find a way to score in overtime after getting the ball back.

After Monday's stinker, Hurts is now completing 57.5 percent of his passes for 1,077 yards (6.5 yards per attempt), four touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 72.4 passer rating over his last five games. He doubled his interception total for the season against the Chargers.

The Eagles have lost three games in a row, even though the defense has only allowed 19.2 points per game during that stretch. Just imagine if Dak Prescott got that level of support from his defense. The Cowboys might be running away with the NFC East.

Nevertheless, there have been a lot of calls for Philly to fire offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. While he certainly hasn't covered himself in glory, and the Eagles would certainly benefit from a new play-caller, it doesn't take a football purist to recognize that Hurts is the biggest problem.

It’s no surprise that Barkley went to bat for his QB. Nothing good comes from piling on a teammate after a bad game. But that quote doesn’t pass the smell test. Anyone watching knew the Eagles’ best chance of beating the Chargers was to keep the ball out of Hurts’ hands.

They lost by a field goal in overtime despite Hurts throwing four picks. All he had to do was avoid a historically bad game, and the Eagles would have walked out of Inglewood with a win to all but end the Cowboys’ season.
