Given their status as the most popular team in the NFL — and whether you believe that or not, it's the truth — the Dallas Cowboys are consistently linked to just about every high-profile free agent and trade target who becomes available.
And it's been no different with Davante Adams.
When it became clear the Las Vegas Raiders were ready to part ways with Adams ahead of the trade deadline this past fall, the Cowboys were viewed as an option, even though it was inevitable that he would ultimately end up being dealt to the New York Jets to reunite with Aaron Rodgers, which is precisely what happened.
And while the Jets as a whole were a massive disappointment during the 2024 campaign, Adams played solid football in his 11 games with Gang Green, catching 67 passes for 854 yards and seven touchdowns.
But now that the Jets have opted to move on from Rodgers after two seasons — well, four plays and a full season anyway — the general consensus is that they'll do the same with Adams, who has a $38.34 million cap hit in each of the next two seasons. And unless he agrees to restructure his contract, there's no way New York keeps him.
The Jets could attempt to trade the six-time Pro Bowler, of course, and they'd likely get some decent draft capital in return. But they'd have to find a team willing to take on that massive salary. And that's a 32-year-old with a massive salary, by the way.
If the Jets can't find a trade partner, they'll just release him, at which point Adams would become a free agent for the first time in his career. But whatever the decision, he's out the door.
Naturally, the Cowboys have been viewed as a possible landing spot. And while it would be entertaining to see Dak Prescott have the option to throw to CeeDee Lamb on one side and Davante Adams on the other.
But it doesn't look like that's going to happen. And it seemingly has nothing to do with financials.
Davante Adams reportedly wants to join a West Coast team, which the Cowboys obviously aren't
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, if the Jets and Adams do indeed part ways this offseason, the three-time First-Team All-Pro would prefer to play on the West Coast.
"The Jets must address the future of receiver Davante Adams," Fowler wrote, "whose $38.3 million cap hit is untenable. A source told me Adams is intrigued by a return to the West Coast and would be open to potentially joining teams such as the Rams or Chargers -- if he gets released. I would put the 49ers in the conversation, too. Adams grew up in Northern California."
Dallas, of course, is obviously not located on the West Coast. So, one would think the Cowboys are out of the equation.
But let's get real here. Did anyone actually see Jerry Jones making this happen if the geography wasn't part of the equation?
