Christian Parker's booth move is following an ominous Matt Eberflus script

The latest change for Christian Parker is eerily similar to Matt Eberflus.

The Dallas Cowboys are looking to turn the page from a humiliating loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. The Green Bay Packers are next up, but the biggest problem around Dallas is on the defensive side.

First-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker has had trouble getting his unit to produce, and there are changes coming. Dallas owner and general manager Jerry Jones was a guest on 105.3 The Fan and revealed that Parker will now call plays from the booth.

Cowboy fans are used to this move, as Dallas pulled the same thing with former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus last season. And considering they moved on from Eberflus, this isn't the kind of script that Parker wants to follow.

Cowboys moving Christian Parker feels like Matt Eberflus all over again

This announcement comes one day after it was announced that Dallas is bringing Mike Pettine onto the coaching staff. It's believed that Pettine was brought in to give Parker advice, but with him moving upstairs, it proves they are looking for anything to turn that ship around.

Instead of letting him figure things out down on the field, the Cowboys are searching for a switch. Last season, Dallas made this same move ahead of their Week 16 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Dallas had dropped two straight games before the move, giving up 30-plus points in each game.

Under Eberflus' watch, Dallas finished 30th in total defense (377), 32nd in pass defense (251.5), 23rd in run defense (125.5), and dead last in scoring defense (30.1).

Those stats are a harsh reminder of how bad that group was, and with Parker at the helm, things haven't gotten better. Through five games, Dallas still has a ton of trouble slowing opposing teams down. They currently rank 31st in total defense (395.4), 21st in pass defense (227), 32nd in run defense (168.4), and 25th in scoring defense (27.2).

Cowboys' Christian Parker patience is wearing thin no matter what they say

Despite the flurry of additions to that side of the ball, the results seem to be worse in several categories. The fact that Eberflus was moved upstairs in December isn't a good sign for Parker and shows that patience is wearing thin in Dallas.

That move is one that teams typically make when they don't have any answers. They believe that looking at things from above can give a coach an edge, as they can see how each play unfolds.

We'll have to wait and see how this approach pans out, but it's hard to keep a positive head given how the first five games played out. Eberflus was forced to do the same in 2025 and still got axed several weeks later. His defense didn't improve, and if Parker's unit follows the same path, his time in Dallas could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

It's never ideal to have these changes come just a few weeks into a new job, but that's Parker's reality. He needs his defense to pick things up. For his and Dallas' sake, they hope this move pans out, even though it didn't work for Eberflus less than a year ago.
