Brian Schottenheimer and the Dallas Cowboys are in danger of letting perhaps the most winnable division in football slip through their grasp, but they could end up with just a little bit of reprieve against a Philadelphia Eagles team that is limping into Monday Night Football with a comically long injury list.
Not only will they be without Jalen Hurts due to his concerning blood clot issue, but they could be without stars on both sides of the ball. Star wide receiver DeVonta Smith has been ruled out, while pass rushers Jonathan Greenard and Nolan Smith also won't play.
As far as Dallas is concerned, big names like wide receiver George Pickens, left tackle Tyler Guyton, and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. are all in line to play after being listed on past injury reports. Cornerback Cobie Durant and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown are also set to return after long spells on the sideline due to injury.
Given the discrepancy in talent on display in this game, it's fair to wonder if Schottenheimer will have a job on Tuesday morning if he loses this game.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer may get fired if he loses to beat-up Eagles
The story of the Cowboys' season seemed to be similar to what fans saw in 2025. The offense has the ingredients needed for a complete laser show, but the Christian Parker-led defense is letting them down due to subpar talent. As bad as that is, considering how this is a thematic rerun of last season, that would at least be understandable.
However, Schottenheimer and the Cowboys' offense have been much worse than expected, particularly over the last two weeks. With consecutive primetime losses against a Jalon-Daniels-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers team and a Green Bay Packers squad that was ravaged on the offensive line, Dak Prescott and Schottenheimer's preferred unit have been torched.
With both Pickens and CeeDee Lamb healthy, a strong offensive line when healthy and a running game that should be performing much better than it has been, the team's struggles aren't due to a lack of talent on that side of the ball. Blaming it on "play-calling" entirely isn't fair either, but Schottenheimer hasn't covered himself in glory.
The Dallas Cowboys must beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night
The Cowboys may never get a better shot to beat the Eagles this early in the season, given all of their injuries and positively wretched vibes eminating from Lincoln Financial Field. Schottenheimer being on the hot seat for a notoriously patient Cowboys front office might sound like hyperbole, but losing this game would certainly get some discussions stirring.
Jerry Jones has made it clear in his golden years that he isn't going to tolerate losing, and Schottenheimer would need to make one heck of a sales pitch to keep himself employed.
