The Dallas Cowboys have made some major upgrades in the wide receiver room over the last few months, adding George Pickens to a room that already includes former All-Pro CeeDee Lamb and the emerging Jalen Tolbert. Unfortunately, this could have adverse effects for the rest of the roster.
2024 draft pick Ryan Flournoy may have flashed a bit of his potential during the preseason, but he finds himself in a situation where the only way he could end up making the final 53-man roster is if one of the veterans ahead of him suffers a major injury or falls apart in the preseason.
On a team that could be weighing the possibility of even keeping six wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster, Flournoy's chances of impressing Schottenheimer and sticking around seem to be shrinking with each day as the season approaches.
Ryan Flournoy faces long odds of making Cowboys 53-man roster
Flournoy's chances of even making it to the NFL, as most of the general populace couldn't even describe Southeastern Missouri State University, let alone hold an opinion on the quality of their football program. Luckily, a strong set of workouts helped convince Dallas to take a swing on him.
Flournoy managed to catch 10 passes for 102 yards in his rookie season, but Dallas was clearly not happy with his level of production. As it stands right now, the best case scenario for Flournoy is earning the No. 6 spot on the wide receiver depth chart, which is not ideal.
The top three of Lamb, Pickens, and Jalen Tolbert seem to be locked in. Kavontae Turpin will reportedly have a bigger offensive role, and the Cowboys invested a fourth-round pick to trade for Jonathan Mingo last season. Flournoy and Jalen Brooks will likely be competing for the sixth wide receiver spot, if Dallas even decides to keep five.
Flournoy's ability to play on special teams should give him a leg up when compared to the rest of the players fighting for one of the final roster spots, but unless the Cowboys are very enticed by his potential as a pass-catcher, Flournoy needs to prepare for either a pink slip or practice squad stay.
