The Dallas Cowboys just lost one name in their hypothetical head coaching search, as Bill Belichick will not be the one who follows Mike McCarthy. Instead, he stunned the world by taking a job outside of the NFL as a whole.

Belichick was hired as the head coach at North Carolina in a five-year deal that will, in all likelihood, create a path for his son Stephen to succeed him. Belichick going to Chapel Hill officially takes the Cowboys out of the running for him, if they had any sort of interest in him.

Rather than bringing the six-time Super Bowl champion into the fold in a desperate attempt to try to relieve the glory days, the Cowboys should be happy that Belichick is headed for the college ranks. As a result, the Cowboys have been saved from themselves after dodging this bullet.

3 reasons the Dallas Cowboys should be thrilled Bill Belichick chose to join UNC

3. He and Jerry Jones would clash

Anyone hiring Belichick does so with the knowledge he will be given complete control of the entire organization, from the most minute details to big-picture decisions. Jerry Jones, meanwhile, is likely not going to be as accommodating of someone who could rip power away from him.

While the Cowboys could do with a more delicate touch from Jones inside and outside of football matters, would it really have been a wise decision to essentially neuter top executive Will McClay and set up a cate match between two of the most stubborn men in football history for control of the roster?

2. His offensive knowledge is outdated

Belichick's defensive knowledge, scouting, and management is as good as it gets, and it never faltered once in two decades as the coach of the Patriots. What ultimately brought him down was his inability to adapt to modern offenses when the Tom Brady factor didn't elevate everything around him.

Between an overly conservative style and entrusting coaches like Matt Patricia and Joe Judge into prominent roles as coordinators and play-callers, Belichick bungled Mac Jones and looked like a dinosaur at the end of his Patriots tenure. If getting the most out of Prescott is the goal, Belichick is the wrong hire.

1. The Cowboys can focus on younger hires

The Cowboys are always going to chase big, flashy names whenever they have an opening, but Belichick would have been grandiose even for them. Instead of getting seduced by him slaming his six Super Bowl rings on Jones' table, the Cowboys can get with the times and hire a younger coach.

Be it offensive or defensive-minded, this league is full of great coordinators who would love to work with a high-end quarterback, wide receiver, and pass rusher who will all be locked into long-term contracts soon. Belichick would have been a brand name, but not as practical of a move for Dallas.
