The Dallas Cowboys may have fallen short of the playoffs in 2025, but they showed signs of promise in their first year under Brian Schottenheimer. The offense was one of the best in the league, and the defense took measurable steps forward after adding Quinnen Williams in the middle of the season.

But the Cowboys could be headed for a major setback before the 2026 season begins. They have a few key veterans set to hit free agency this offseason.

Jerry Jones needs to do whatever it takes to keep these three players in Dallas this year. If he fails, the Cowboys will have more holes on their roster than they can manage.

3 veterans the Dallas Cowboys must keep for 2026

Javonte Williams

The Cowboys' rushing attack took a major step forward in terms of efficiency in 2025. They averaged 4.6 yards per carry, more than half a yard over their mark from the previous season.

While Schottenheimer and Klayton Adams deserve some of the credit for that progress, the contributions of Javonte Williams can't be overlooked. He had a great year, eclipsing 1,000 yards on the ground for the first time in his career.

Spotrac estimates that his market value will sit around $7 million per year in free agency. Unless Jones plans to take a big swing for a star like Breece Hall, he should bring back Williams, even if it's an overpay.

Jadeveon Clowney

Clowney was a late addition for the Cowboys last season, but he didn't take long to make an impact. At 32 years old, he led the team in sacks. Dallas will likely add to their edge group this offseason, but the veteran needs to continue to be part of their rotation. It might take $10 million to bring him back, but that price is more than worth it if he can maintain his current level of production.

George Pickens

Pickens is easily the most well-known free agent coming out of Dallas this offseason. He became one of the top receivers in the league in 2025, forming an unstoppable duo alongside CeeDee Lamb.

Jones is known for dragging out negotiations with his top players, so don't be surprised if the reports of a looming franchise tag are true. However it happens, Jones needs to lock in this pair of receivers for the foreseeable future. If he doesn't, this team will likely be on the outside of the playoffs looking in again.
