The Dallas Cowboys have pushed the envelope this offseason in terms of upgrading their roster. Dallas wasn’t active in free agency, but they created enough cap space to retain multiple prominent players and filled their remaining roster holes by trading for Stephon Gilmore and Brandin Cooks.

The importance of re-signing Donovan Wilson and Leighton Vander Esch shouldn’t be understated, but others ended up signing elsewhere.

Not every player who leaves in free agency should be considered a huge loss. Conversely, every returning player or external signing shouldn’t be celebrated as a win just. With that in mind, let’s underline some Cowboys free agents who left that the fan base will miss and a few who left that won’t be missed.

Will miss: Noah Brown, WR

This might cause some controversy, but Brown was an important player for the Cowboys for most of last season. With Michael Gallup missing the first three games following ACL surgery and never really looking like himself the entire campaign, Brown served as Dallas’ de facto WR3 and largely was up to the challenge.

A former seventh-round pick out of Ohio State, Brown compiled seven games with at least 50 or more receiving yards or a touchdown. He more than doubled his previous career-high in catches and receiving yards, caught the first three touchdowns of his career and was responsible for 25 first downs.

Brown faded down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs, but Cowboys Nation understands the role he played early on. In fact, some of Brown’s best games came when Cooper Rush started for the injured Dak Prescott, which is when Dallas kept its season alive, so don’t gloss over that.

Further, Brown provided great blocking in the run game and still contributed on special teams despite an increased role at receiver. Yes, Dallas has Brandin Cooks now, but the options behind Gallup leave a lot to be desired now that Brown has signed with the Texans.
