The Dallas Cowboys caught a ton of criticism for their inactivity on the first day of the legal tampering period. That changed on a dime early Tuesday when they re-signed free agent Donovan Wilson to a three-year contract.

Reports indicated the Cowboys would ultimately be outbid for Wilson, but Jerry Jones, to his credit, didn’t let that happen.

It’s a three-year deal worth up to $24 million with the first two years fully guaranteed at $13.5 million, and keeps the safety trio of Wilson, Jayron Kearse, and Malik Hooker together for at least another season.

It became obvious during the negotiating process that Kearse and Hooker were monitoring Wilson’s future. Kearse himself authored some cryptic tweets; one in particular that set Cowboys fans into a collective state of panic that Wilson was on his way to another team.

Hooker, meanwhile, kept asking for updates on social media.

Once the news became official, Hooker unleashed a tweet that will have Cowboys Nation ready to run through several brick walls.

The three-headed dragon is back, and Dan Quinn must be ecstatic. This news changes the entire conversation of Dallas’ defense for 2023. With Wilson back, Quinn can continue to get creative with how he deploys his safeties.

Nobody would dispute that Micah Parsons is the unit’s most invaluable player, but safety is perhaps the most important position group.

The trio’s 2022 stats tell the whole story.

  • Wilson: 101 tackles (led the team), 5 sacks, 7 TFL, 40 pressures, 37 defensive stops, 87.1 pass rush grade from PFF
  • Kearse: 77 tackles, 7 TFL, 5 passes defended, 27 defensive stops, 83.2 passer rating allowed, 78.6 run-defense grade
  • Hooker: 62 tackles, 2 TFL, 3 interceptions, 3 passes defended, one defensive touchdown, 73.9 player grade from PFF.

There are undoubtedly better secondaries in the NFL, but good luck finding a better safety arsenal than Wilson, Kearse, and Hooker.

Hooker, meanwhile, can hardly contain his happiness over the news.

Even Kearse got in on the celebrating!

A brotherhood has clearly formed since Kearse, Hooker, and Wilson first joined forces in 2021. All three players want to see the other succeed, and it’s clear Hooker and Kearse are thrilled Wilson got his money after a breakout year.

What an awesome start to free agency. Who would’ve thought?
