This trade package would send Jalen Ramsey to Cowboys in blockbuster deal

Cornerback is a massive need for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason. Trevon Diggs might become the NFL’s highest-paid player at the position before long, and DaRon Bland’s future looks bright after a promising rookie year, but the Cowboys don’t have much else behind that duo.

Wouldn’t you know it, one of the game’s elite corners — Rams star Jalen Ramsey — will be taking his talents elsewhere in 2023.

NFL Network reported the Rams have had trade talks about Ramsey, and there’s belief he’ll be dealt in the coming weeks.

Trading for Ramsey would qualify as an all-in move the Cowboys have strongly opposed over the last decade. It stands to reason that acquiring an All-Pro cornerback wouldn’t make Dallas the Super Bowl favorites for 2023, but it would catapult them right up there with the shortlist of contenders.

Of course, such a trade won’t be easy. The package of picks that will be required is one thing, but Ramsey has cap hits of $25.2 million, $26.7 million, and $22.7 million, respectively, over the final three years of his contract.

That might lower the asking price, but not by much. Let’s take a look at what it might take the Cowboys to poach Ramsey from LA.

Fans might be reluctant to part ways with the No. 26 overall pick, but that’s where the bidding starts when you make “all-in” moves. It’s also a fair price considering Ramsey is still in his prime at 28 years old (he’ll turn 29 in the middle of next season), and has a squeaky clean injury history.

Ramsey has played at least 15 games in all but one season, and he’s missed just two games over the last three seasons combined.

Did we mention he still holds the crown for the NFL’s best cornerback? His 90.6 coverage grade since 2020 ranks second at the position, and his 91.2 run-defense grade ranks first. 2022 was considered a down year for his stands, and he allowed a 65.1% completion rate when targeted, and set career-highs in tackles (88), passes defended (18), and sacks (two), and tied his career high with four interceptions.

Even better? Dallas ould move off Ramsey next year without absorbing a crippling dead cap charge if he doesn’t meet expectations. That timeline would align with Diggs’ next contract. As a second-round pick, Diggs’ rookie deal doesn’t have a fifth-year option, so 2023 marks the final year of his contract.

The Cowboys wouldn’t trade for Ramsey as a one-year rental, but the terms of his contract do allow for a potential quick fix.
