The NFL Honors didn’t start off great for the Dallas Cowboys, as Micah Parsons finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting for the second year in a row.

From that moment on, though, it was a night to remember for the Cowboys. Fittingly, the showcase concluded with Dak Prescott winning Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. The award recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field, and commitment to philanthropy and community impact.

Prescott created the Faith Fight Finish Foundation to advance colon cancer research in memory of his late mother, Peggy, who died of cancer in 2013. Additionally, the 29-year-old quarterback has been a pillar in the fields of mental health and suicide prevention following the death of his brother, Jace.

Blessed and humbled to receive the award, Prescott delivered a moving acceptance speech in which he paid tribute to his mother and brother.

Prescott pledged his brother’s death would be “one life taken to save millions,” and ended his speech by pointing to the sky and saying “Love you, Mama,” just like he does after every touchdown.

  • “My mother told me when she was diagnosed with cancer that, ‘All greats have a story. Allow me to be your story.’ She is my ‘why.’ And with these words, just as she does and always did, my mother inspired me and motivated me to be great beyond the circumstances. And it was in her honor I started my foundation in 2017 and named it the ‘Faith, fight, finish’ – the three words she left me and my brothers.”
  • Incredibly, Prescott winning the Walter Payton Man of the Year upstaged DeMarcus Ware getting voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It was Ware’s second year on the ballot after he was grossly snubbed in his first year of eligibility in 2022. Ware is the Cowboys’ all-time sacks leader, ranks ninth all time in sacks, was an All-Pro for seven straight seasons spanning 2006-12, and won a Super Bowl with the Broncos in 2016.
  • How did Ware find out the big news? None other than Jerry Jones, who invited the newly-minted Hall of Famer into a room and surprised him mid-embrace. Ware was left speechless … and breathless by the news. Literally. “I can’t even breath right now,” Ware said. “You got me on this one.”

NFL News:

  • Joining Ware in the 2023 Pro Football Hall of Fame class are Darrelle Revis, Ronde Barber, Chuck Howley, a Super Bowl champ and a five-time All-Pro with the Cowboys, Joe Klecko, Joe Thomas, Ken Riley, and Don Coryell.
  • The other notable awards from NFL Honors include Patrick Mahomes winning his second MVP in six seasons. The Chiefs phenom earned 48 of 50 first-place votes after leading the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns, and setting an NFL record for 5,614 total yards in a season.
  • The Bills and Bengals medical staffs, including some of the staff from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center that helped save Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s life were celebrated Thursday night. Hamlin joined them on stage and delivered a powerful speech thanking everyone and urging folks to keep fighting no matter the circumstances.
