While Mike McCarthy’s job is safe, the Dallas Cowboys, seemingly out of nowhere, announced sweeping changes to their coaching staff this week they failed to make it to the NFC Championship Game for the 27th season in a row.

The coaches not returning to Dallas include linebackers coach George Edwards, who was instrumental in the development of Micah Parsons, and a potential candidate to replace Dan Quinn assuming he’s hired as a head coach.

Joining Edwards on the chopping block are offensive line coach Joe Philbin, running backs coach Skip Peete, defensive line coach Leon Lett, as well as assistant head coach Rob Davis and offensive assistant Kyle Valero.

Valero and Philbin are two of McCarthy’s right-hand men, so that indicates these changes were made by the front office; not McCarthy.

More Cowboys News:

  • Kellen Moore seems likely to return to Dallas for a fifth season as the team’s offensive coordinator. Moore was a finalist for the Panthers head coaching vacancy, but it was reported Friday that Carolina hired Frank Reich. While Moore could be subject to the chopping block in the name of bringing in a few face, he’s under contract for 2023, and the Cowboys’ offense has been elite with him pulling the strings.
  • While we’re on the subject, Dan Quinn was expected to have his second interview with Indianapolis Saturday. Quinn had a second interview with the Cardinals Wednesday. It seemed like a matter of when, not if, the Cowboys defensive coordinator would leave for a head coaching job. For the second straight offseason, though, Quinn spurned other offers to return to Dallas.
  • It’s too early to say who might replace Dallas’ fired coaches, but ESPN mentioned James Campen as a potential replacement for OL coach Joe Philbin. Campen coached alongside McCarthy with the Packers.

NFL News:

  • The Jets hired former Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett as their offensive coordinator. Hackett has previous ties with head coach Robert Saleh. As the Packers former offensive coordinator, the move adds to the growing speculation that New York is potential trade destination for Aaron Rodgers.
  • 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey did not practice Thursday due to a calf injury suffered against the Cowboys in the Divisional Round. Despite the missed practice, McCaffrey told reporters there’s a “zero” percent chance he doesn’t suit up Sunday against the Eagles.
  • In Mel Kiper’s first mock draft, the ESPN expert had the Bears drafting Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter first overall, and the Texans taking Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud second overall. Alabama QB Bryce Young fell to the Colts at No. 4 overall. Let the speculation commence!
