Even Texas Governor Greg Abbott adds to pile of Cowboys’ Brett Maher memes

The Bengals have, “Who Dey?!” The Saints have, “Who Dat?!” And the Dallas Cowboys have Greg Olsen playfully asking, “Is this four-down territory?!”

That’s the new reality of watching FOX’s No. 1 broadcast team try to make sense of Cowboys kicker Brett Maher.

Somehow, Dallas survived Maher missing four extra points on Wild Card Weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It might have had something to do with Tom Brady finally finding his way over the hill, while the rest of his Bucs teammates stumbled to mediocrity all year long.

Against a furious opponent like the San Francisco 49ers, though, the Cowboys can’t leave any points on the table … which is why it was so disconcerting when Maher sliced a knuckler wide left on his first extra point opportunity of the afternoon. Yes, the kick was blocked. Yes, it was also horrific prior to the blocking.

That miss heard ’round the world — complete with a pre-kick sideline closeup of Maher! — led even Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (famously wheelchair-bound) to offer up his services.

Cowboys kicker Brett Maher memes: Is this four down territory?!

Maher might need Jerry Jones to double back and console him some more after reading that burn, no matter what side of the aisle he falls on.

The memeing only got more thorough when Maher succeeded midway through the third quarter, knocking in a short field goal (shorter than an extra point, in fact) to tie the game up at nine.

As the tipped third-down Dak Prescott pass that preceded the kick was in the air, floating, waiting to be picked … you think Maher was secretly hoping for an interception?

Prescott should be thanking Maher, as his two first-half picks have been largely forgotten — or, at least, absorbed into the larger narrative.

Instead of the world lighting his reputation aflame, they’re busy sarcastically celebrating Maher’s normally-routine efforts.

Einstein’s Network going, “Kaput!” Brett Maher making this difficult. The two 2023 NFL Playoff guarantees you can count on.

It wouldn’t be quite this painful for Cowboys fans, either, if there weren’t an aging and still-elite kicker roaming the other team’s sidelines in Robbie Gould.

Isn’t that the exact kind of player Jerry typically overpays? Would’ve been helpful at the moment!

Add in an unfortunate-looking injury to Tony Pollard, and somehow, all eyes have been on the Cowboys in a largely-even game.

What comes next is anyone’s guess, but it’ll probably involve the name “Brett Maher” trending every 18 minutes for the remainder of the evening.
