The Dallas Cowboys exercised some long-standing demons Monday night. In dominating the Buccaneers 31-14 in the Wild Card Round, the Cowboys secured their first road playoff win in 30 years. Their last win came in 1992 when they defeated the 49ers to advance to the Super Bowl, which they went on to win.

That victory jumpstarted a dynasty that won three Super Bowls in four years. Cowboys fans are hoping something similar happens with this core of players, but let’s not run before we can walk. This is Mike McCarthy’s first playoff win as head coach of the Cowboys after all, right?

Speaking of McCarthy, what more can you say about him?

Heavily scrutinized for coming up small in high-stakes games, McCarthy pushed all the right buttons Monday night.

Between his game management (both fourth down calls resulted in touchdowns), having his players ready to embrace the moment, and getting creative with the offense, McCarthy put on a coaching masterclass against the Bucs.

It must’ve felt great for McCarthy to get this monkey off his back, and the head coach was in great spirits in the locker room postgame. So much so that he broke out in dance while rocking the team victory chain!

McCarthy is feeling himself! You love to see it.

Dak Prescott probably topped the list in terms of players/coaches Cowboys fans were most happy for Monday night, but McCarthy is a close second given all the speculation surrounding his job security leading up to the game.

We all heard it. If the Cowboys are one-and-done in the playoffs again after winning 12 games during the regular season, will Jerry Jones can McCarthy? If Dallas loses a hard-fought battle, would McCarthy be safe? Might the franchise be better off handing the keys of the locker room to Sean Payton?

All of these questions were posed by the NFL media this week. They could resurface at any point because it’s the Cowboys and they draw ratings, but McCarthy deserved this moment. He coached loose all game, and his team reaped the benefits. Only fitting coach decided to let loose during the postgame festivities.

Smiling from ear-to-ear. As he should be. Not only did he secure his first playoff win as Cowboys head coach, but he notched the franchise’s first road playoff win in three decades, and ended Tom Brady’s unbeaten run against Dallas.

Oh, and he squashed a few bogus narratives (Cowboys can’t win on grass or in the blue jerseys) along the way.

Enjoy this one, coach! You deserve it.
