Cowboys get encouraging injury updates for SNF clash vs Colts
By Jerry Trotta
The Dallas Cowboys survived a scare against the New York Giants on Thanksgiving. Now, their schedule lightens up for the next month, allowing them to solidify their playoff standing and keep their No. 1 seed hopes alive. This stretch starts with a Sunday Night Football matchup against the discombobulated Colts.
After winning Jeff Saturday’s initial game as interim head coach, the Colts have dropped two straight fixtures, including an ugly home loss to the Steelers on Monday Night Football in Week 12 when they mustered just 290 yards of total offense.
That would explain why the Cowboys are heavy home favorites. This should — emphasis on should — be a relatively “easy” win for Mike McCarthy’s group, and the confirmed inactives for both teams only amplify that.
Already without right tackle Braden Smith (hello Micah Parsons), and slot cornerback Kenny Moore, the Colts have ruled out wideout Kekee Coutee and quarterback Sam Ehlinger.
The Cowboys, meanwhile, will have all their heavy-hitters for primetime. Questionable coming in, all of Trevon Diggs (illness), Michael Gallup (illness), Jayron Kearse (shoulder), and Anthony Barr (hamstring) are good to go.
DeMarcus Lawrence is also playing. After getting in a full practice on Friday, the star edge rusher wasn’t given an injury designation.
Cowboys Week 13 injury report vs Colts: Trevon Diggs, Michael Gallup, and DeMarcus Lawrence all cleared to play.
This is the best scenario Cowboys fans could’ve hoped for coming into the game, as Quinton Bohanna is the only player missing through injury. Terence Steele was questionable due to personal reasons. Having him at right tackle to contain Kwity Paye, who’s back after missing the last few games, is huge for Dallas.
With budding rookie Damone Clark coming on at linebacker, Jabril Cox is a healthy scratch. The 2021 fourth-round pick has played nearly exclusively on special teams this season. In the six games he’s played, Cox has logged 11 defensive snaps compared to 110 on special teams.
Nahshon Wright is another second-year player struggling to prove himself on Dan Quinn’s defense. Quinn seems content rolling with Trevon Diggs, Anthony Brown and DaRon Bland as his top corners, with Kelvin Joseph serving as a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency option.
Markquese Bell, meanwhile, was a training camp and preseason standout, but the Cowboys are loaded at safety with Jayron Kearse back healthy, and Malik Hooker and Donovan Wilson playing 81% and 89% of the snaps, respectively.
Can’t ask for a better injury report than this. As healthy as you can be this late in the season, the Cowboys are double-digit favorites against a Colts team that’s lost two in a row and is without two of its veteran leaders.
Take care of business, please.
