Round 4: Mazi Smith, DT, Michigan

Hankins was a solid addition as the Cowboys needed a big-bodied nose tackle. He made an impact in his debut but will surely provide even more as the season goes on. The problem is that he too will be a free agent after the season, meaning he was likely a rental for this year alone.

The good news is that they can find a replacement in the mid-rounds, which they do here by selecting Mazi Smith. A 6-foot-3, 326-pound defensive tackle, Smith has surprising agility and could be the long-term answer at the 1-tech for the ‘Boys.

Round 5: Roschon Johnson, RB, Texas

One way or another, the Cowboys will need a new running back in 2023. Tony Pollard is a free agent and they’re not going to be able to afford what he deserves while still paying Ezekiel Elliott. The smart move is to cut ties with Zeke and his albatross of a deal but who knows what the Jones family will do. Heck, they might bid farewell to Pollard and give Elliott another multi-year extension with a raise given their obsession with him being the focal point of the offense.

Whatever happens, they need another backup and Roschon Johnson could fit the bill. The Texas product is big (6-2, 223-pounds), fast, and has limited tread on his tires since he’s been a backup with the Longhorns.

That also means he could be available in the later rounds. Don’t be shocked if he winds up being considered a late-round steal for whoever nabs him.

Round 7: Durell Nchami, EDGE, Maryland

With their final pick in this mock, the Cowboys select Durell Nchami from Maryland. He’s a developmental player who has the right size for the positions. And given the talent they have with Dorance Armstrong, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Sam Williams, they can take their time with such prospects.
