5 major takeaways from the Cowboys upset win over the Rams
2. The run game was a major factor in the win
If you watched the game, you likely thought the offense had a tough showing in this one. Without DeMarcus Lawrence’s scoop-and-score in the first quarter, the Cowboys’ offense put up just 16 points in this game.
However, when the offense did put up points, we have the running backs to thank for getting them there. Tony Pollard had an outstanding game, totaling 86 rushing yards on just eight carries, including a huge 57-yard touchdown run.
Ezekiel Elliott also had a solid day, despite what the averages say. He had 78 yards on 22 carries, with a long of 12 yards. He did a fantastic job of finding holes, but toward the end of the game when the defense knew the team was looking to run the clock out, he was stuffed at the line a handful of times.
Combined, the two averaged 4.8 yards per carry against a defense that consists of Aaron Donald and Bobby Wagner. They had a really solid day and carried the offense, accounting for 164 of the offense’s 239 total yards.
