It’s hard to imagine the Dallas Cowboys’ defense getting even better. The Dan Quinn-led group has allowed the third-fewest points per game, sixth-fewest yards per game, fewest yards per passing attempt, and currently has the second-most sacks in the league.

However, this stellar group has been playing without a defensive back who was deemed the best offseason move by the Cowboys by Bleacher Report: safety Jayron Kearse. The safety went down with a knee sprain during the frustrating Week 1 loss to Tampa Bay, which was an integral loss for the Cowboys.

Now, heading into Week 5, it seems they may be getting their leader back. On Tuesday, Kearse tweeted out a version of a photo of Cerberus (the three-headed hound of Hades in Greek Mythology). While he didn’t put any words with it, many inferred the photo meant a three-headed monster would be returning to the Dallas defense.

Jayron Kearse posts three-headed monster photo to get people excited for his Cowboys return

The 28-year-old had a breakout year with Dallas in 2021 after joining the team on a one-year prove-it deal. In 15 starts, he played almost 90% of defensive snaps, led the team in tackles, had two picks, and exceeded his previous numbers in every stat.

Heading into 2022, Kearse was excited to be the leader of a young and talented group. Thankfully, that group (currently led by Donovan Wilson, Malik Hooker, and Israel Mukuamu) has lived up to its expectations and kept things in order while Kearse has been out.

Within minutes after posting the photo, fans were coming up with their own versions. Many believe the Cowboys safety was inferring that this “monster” would be ball-hawking Hooker, impressive tackler Wilson, and himself — hence the photo below..

On Wednesday (the day after the tweet), the seventh-year veteran was a full participant in practice for the first time in almost a month. While nobody has confirmed whether or not Kearse will play against the Rams yet, the signs are looking good for the man who had the lowest missed-tackle rate among all safeties in 2021.

Kearse’s return will be a huge boost to a position group he believes is already one of the best in the entire NFL. This is what he said to reporters after returning to practice:

"“No. 1. Hands down. If you just go down our safety room, you can’t go to another safety room and match player for player. Can’t.We all complement each other real good, and I’m just excited for all of us to be healthy and out on the field together.”"

Prepare to see the Cowboys’ version of Cerberus on a football field very soon.
