6 takeaways from the Cowboys’ blowout win against the Commanders
6. The Cowboys stumbled into a stable solution at kicker
The Cowboys have struggled to find a stable solution at kicker since Dan Bailey left town. They had turned to Brett Maher in years past but moved on from him after just a couple of seasons. Now, the team decided to bring him back shortly before the season, and it looks like they hit the jackpot.
While Money Maher is mostly known for kicking long-ranged game-winners and missing the short-yardage attempts, he’s been as his nickname signifies so far this season: money. On Sunday, No. 19 made all four of his attempted field goals, including a 53-yard bomb. He did miss an extra point, but otherwise, he made everything else.
Now with four weeks in the books, Maher currently sits tied first in the league in field goals made, while connecting at a 90.9% clip. He’s also tied for the league lead in 50+ yard field goals made with four.
Maher looks a lot more poised than he used to be, and he has gained the respect of many fans in Cowboys Nation. Somehow, he has stabilized this special teams unit, and the Cowboys managed to strike gold on a former Cowboy through free agency, whether they meant to or not.
