4. The Cowboys should refrain from overpaying for Dalton Schultz

I don’t mean to necessarily kick someone while they’re down. I do certainly wish for a speedy recovery for Dalton Schultz and for him to still take back the starting tight end spot when he returns. However, one thing to take away from this game is that the Cowboys are just fine without Schultz.

He had a great season last year, and he was off to a fine start this year as well, racking up nine catches for 80 yards through Week 2. However, Monday night showed that he is replaceable. With the trio of Peyton Hendershot, Jake Ferguson, and Sean McKeon, the team gets good production with a lower price tag and younger players.

The hottest of the three players Monday was Hendershot. The undrafted free agent caught three passes for 43 yards, including a huge 29-yard catch and run in which he showcased his explosiveness and athleticism.

Ferguson, essentially a Schultz clone, also participated in the passing game, where he logged two catches for 13 yards. He isn’t as explosive as Hendershot, but he brings better blocking to the table, while also serving well as a short-yardage security blanket for a quarterback.

McKeon is another good mix of receiving-blocking talent, but a bit more geared towards blocking. He is one that would, like Monday, only be elevated due to injury, but he is a serviceable player that can open running lanes for backs.
