7 takeaways from the Cowboys thrilling win over the Giants in Week 3
2. Cooper Rush looks good, and he needs to stick around
By “stick around”, no, I do not mean as the starter. However, he looks great. He has clearly taken some steps in his development to where he will not be the primary reason that this team could lose a game.
In three starts now (one against the Minnesota Vikings last year), he is 3-0 with three drives that led to game-winning touchdowns or field goals. Not many get that out of their backup quarterback.
Cooper Rush wasn’t even serviceable in this game, he was actually good. The Central Michigan product threw for 215 yards and a touchdown on a 67.7 completion percentage. Those numbers aren’t mind-boggling, but he looked poised and limited mistakes to none.
Monday night, PFF graded Rush as the best offensive player for the Cowboys with an 82.1 offensive grade, 82.1 being the passing grade he received as well. His 82.1 passing grade had him tied with Tua Tagovailoa for the third-best among quarterbacks for Week 3, behind Jacoby Brissett and Matthew Stafford.
Before the regular season, many were hoping for the Cowboys to move on from Rush and sign a different backup quarterback. He didn’t have a great preseason, and some were even wanting Will Grier to be the QB2. However, it looks like the staff unlocked something in the undrafted free agent.
