Dan Orlovsky thinks Cowboys should target Ravens backup over Jimmy G

It’s only Week 2 and the panic button is already being hit on the Dallas Cowboys season. After losing quarterback Dak Prescott to a fractured hand, a team that already looked pretty terrible with their starting-caliber quarterback is in serious trouble. The vibes from around the league are not good.

If you ask Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, current backups Cooper Rush and Will Grier are talented enough to keep this team afloat until Prescott is back. But I would take everything he says with a grain of salt given this is coming from a man who is also refusing to put his QB1 on injured reserve because he thinks he will be ready in four weeks or less (even though initial reports for this type of injury were 6-8 weeks).

It’s true that Rush was able to lead this team to a victory in Prescott’s absence last season against the Minnesota Vikings. However, it’s also a fact that Rush had a very subpar 2022 preseason showing, leading most analysts to feel that the backup is not the answer if the Cowboys have any chance at salvaging their season.

One such analyst is ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky. He appeared on “Get Up” and Keyshawn Johnson and Max Kellerman’s podcast on Tuesday to preach what he thinks can save the Cowboys season: Baltimore Ravens backup QB Tyler Huntley.

"“Their season is over. The only way that it’s not over is to call Baltimore and see if they would trade me Tyler Huntley. That is the one player I believe at that spot, you have the chance to get and also can potentially save that six-game stretch.”"

Dan Orlovsky thinks the Cowboys should pursue Tyler Huntley instead of Jimmy Garoppolo

Huntley is a product of Utah and has spent the last two seasons with the Ravens as Lamar Jackson’s backup. In 2020, he only played in two games. Last year, he started four games and threw for 1,081 yards and three touchdowns.

Many NFL experts have thrown out names over the last two days as possible Prescott replacements. The most common names have been Cam Newton and Jimmy Garoppolo. On his “Get Up” appearance, Orlovsky said he felt Huntley was a smarter move than Jimmy G:

"“If I was the Dallas Cowboys, that would be the phone call I would make. It would not be to San Francisco for Jimmy Garoppolo. If they don’t make a move, their season is over. Tyler Huntley is a player that has proven to be a pretty good talent. The offensive line could not protect… he is mobile enough to cover that up. Here’s the reality. If the Cowboys don’t make a move, or at least try to, legitimately, everybody in their organization is saying ‘we’re done.’ If they do, they got a chance to save the season. But it ain’t gonna be with Cooper Rush.”"

Who wants to be the one to tell Dan that the Joneses only shop in the bargain bin and love to just sit around and hope rookies and backups figure things out? It would be nice to see the front office use a sense of urgency to make a real change instead of counting on Prescott to miraculously return early or relying on a subpar backup QB, but that’s just not who the Joneses are.

Does a Huntley trade make sense to you? Even if it does, do you think the front office would pick up the phone and try?
