Full disclaimer. It pains us to talk positively about the Eagles. But the reality is that Howie Roseman has done far more for his subpar team than Jerry Jones did for his team this offseason.

Both the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles had frustrating ends to their 2021 seasons. Both GMs vowed to be better in 2022. The difference is one GM actually did something about it. Roseman said this after the Eagles’ blowout loss to Tampa Bay:

"“We want to build a team that has home playoff games, gets to play in front of our fan base and really build a team that gets a bye.”"

He has done exactly that.

The Cowboys brought in James Washington, Ryan Nall, and Dante Fowler Jr. as their external free agents this offseason. Washington is injured and Nall was released from the team. Other than bringing in KaVontae Turpin during camp and drafting (what some may deem questionable) nine rookies, the front office hasn’t done much. If they did, it was at the last moment, such as bringing in Brett Maher because there was basically no one else available.

Here are just some of the things Roseman and his crew accomplished:

  1. Re-signing Jason Kelce and securing his replacement by drafting Cam Jurgens
  2. Signed Haason Reddick
  3. Re-signed Derek Varnett to help bring stability to a struggling pass rush
  4. Signed Kyzir White who was far better than Alex Singleton
  5. Traded several picks to the Saints for valuable draft capital that will allow Philly to continue drafting well in 2023
  6. Traded for A.J. Brown and immediately signed him to an extension
  7. Drafted NCAA favorite and standout in Georgia DL Jordan Davis
  8. Arguably got the steal of the draft by selecting Nakobe Dean in the third round
  9. Signed James Bradberry to help a struggling secondary
  10. Got the Vikings to give them draft picks for a WR Roseman didn’t even want in Jalen Reagor
  11. Essentially stole Chauncey Gardner-Johnson from the Saints in a trade.

This isn’t even everything. If Roseman did two or three of these things, he would’ve had a great offseason. But the collective total of it all truly proves the Eagles arguably had one of the best offseasons in the entire league.

The Eagles are farther ahead of the Cowboys (in terms of the roster) than fans want to admit

Roseman already had a team with a top rushing attack, a great offensive line, and a strong defensive line. However, he continued to do more and more. With several picks and lots of cap space at his disposal, Roseman filled the holes on his roster. He didn’t leave any question marks.

Reddick will help sack numbers. Hurts has a reliable weapon in Brown. The secondary is improved.

Meanwhile, Jerry Jones continually wanted to search for internal answers. Instead of fixing clear issues like kicker, offensive line, and wide receiver early enough in the offseason, he waited. Now, there’s barely anything left. Jones is too proud to admit when he makes a roster mistake, so he sits with what he has and hopes for the best.

As Peter Schrager said, these two NFC East teams entered the offseason neck and neck. They both had roster holes to fill.

To be clear, the Cowboys still have a chance to beat the Eagles in the NFC East. This isn’t about whether the Cowboys can beat Philly on the field or not. This is about what the two teams’ front offices did for their rosters ahead of the 2022 season. One team was clearly superior.

We aren’t counting the Cowboys out. The team still has many advantages over the Eagles. We are saying that the Joneses simply didn’t do enough to help this team. Hopefully, that won’t come back to bite them as they try to become back-to-back NFC East champions this season.
