The tight end room looked very scary in March. Blake Jarwin was gone and the Cowboys were forced to put Dalton Schultz on the franchise tag. Behind Schultz, things looked bleak. Jeremy Sprinkle (who is now on the IR) and Sean McKeon only had seven total receptions for the Cowboys last year.

McKeon had a reason for that. Even though he went undrafted last season, the Cowboys prioritized him as a UDFA quickly after the draft. Unfortunately, McKeon sustained a high ankle sprain in the offseason and didn’t even get activated onto the Dallas roster until Week 10. Because of that, he ended 2021 with only four catches for 27 yards and one touchdown.

Now, he’s back and ready to battle for a TE2 spot. Rookie Jake Ferguson has been excellent in preseason games and the TE2 job is McKeon’s to lose. Another player to keep an eye on is the 2022 UDFA Peyton Hendershot out of Indiana. Hendershot had a good performance versus the Chargers and is making a name for himself as well.

There’s a serious battle for the depth portion of the tight end room right now. If McKeon has a strong game against Seattle, it could mean the end of the road for Hendershot.
