Preseason Week 1 wasn’t kind to the Dallas Cowboys. After being defeated in a scrimmage during the week, they then suffered a loss in their first exhibition game against the Denver Broncos.

While the preseason should be taken with a grain of salt, there were some glaring concerns including a general lack of discipline that led to 17 penalties as well as some struggles in coverage. This Saturday against the Los Angeles Chargers is a chance to try and clean up some issues and there are a few players to keep an eye on as they aim to do just that.

3. Jalen Tolbert, Wide Receiver

It’s hard to say Jalen Tolbert was the problem since the ball wasn’t really making it to him cleanly, but the 2022 third-round pick was able to catch just two of seven targets for 10 yards. It was clear from the start they wanted to get him involved in the offense but instead of trying to let this happen naturally, Cooper Rush continued to force the ball his way which led to many incompletions and one interception.

For Dallas, they were trying to make Tolbert a focal point of the offense since he’s going to be thrown to the fire in Week 1 of the regular season. With Michael Gallup not expected to be back following ACL surgery and James Washington rehabbing from a fractured foot, Tolbert is in line to start in the opener across from CeeDee Lamb.

While Lamb will draw more attention in the regular season, Tolbert is going to have to step up. Week 2 against the Chargers will be a great time for him to show he can shake off a disappointing outing and get the job done.
