The Dallas Cowboys head into their first preseason game this Saturday against the Denver Broncos. They have quite a few players who are in a situation where this could be their last chance to make an impression on this coaching staff and front office.

We’ve seen how the preseason can make a player who’s been a star at camp fall out of favor quickly and end up as a roster cut. Some may not even get a chance to make the practice squad.

There are quite a few roster battles currently ongoing, and now with just three preseason games instead of four, they can’t waste any time. These games are a chance to prove that they deserve to make this Cowboys roster. Here are a few of those battles.

1. Markquese Bell vs Israel Mukuamu, Safety

Whenever a player is a late-round pick from the previous year, their spot on the roster is almost always in jeopardy. That’s exactly where last year’s sixth-rounder Israel Mukuamu finds himself right now.

The second-year cornerback turned safety is trying to fend off the UDFA standout Markquese Bell who the Cowboys made a priority free agent after the 2022 NFL Draft. Bell has been the talk of the town since his arrival at OTA’s and training camp and for good reason.

Bell is a versatile player who can cover receivers and tight ends, which is exactly what the Dallas coaches and front office envisioned from Mukuamu. So far though, Bell has been the standout and now has a chance to solidify his spot on the roster with a strong showing in their upcoming preseason games.

Mukuamu is going to need to have a seemingly perfect preseason in order to claim his roster spot. The one major thing he has going for him is prior, in-game NFL experience.
