4 Receivers the Cowboys could end up acquiring via trades
This Dallas Cowboys roster has depth at most positions outside of the one that many may consider one of the biggest question marks heading the season: wide receiver. Outside of CeeDee Lamb and injured receivers Michael Gallup and James Washington, this group is a who’s who of players that have yet to really show anything in a regular season.
Even though Jerry Jones is adamant about letting these young players compete, many want this Dallas front office to sign a free agent receiver with regular season experience. The issue with doing that is most of those receivers that have had their names thrown in the hat for the Cowboys are likely still available because of injury concerns, age, or availability issues.
So instead of looking for free agents that seem to be free agents for good reason, vice president of player personnel Will McClay (with the help of new wide receivers coach Robert Prince) could focus more on receivers currently on other rosters. Trades are still an option and the Cowboys should consider sending other players or giving up draft picks if it means helping this offense.
Here are a few outside-the-box names that could be on both McClay and Princes’ radar.
4 wide receiver options the Cowboys could get via trading with another team
1. Nelson Agholor, New England Patriots
Since being taken in the first round by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015, Agholor has bounced around a bit. He spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020, and is currently with the New England Patriots.
While he hasn’t lived up to his draft status, Agholor is still a dangerous receiver when given the opportunity, which you can see from his healthy 12.6 yards per catch average and 29 career touchdowns.
The issue for Agholor is that teams have primarily used him as their homerun threat and nothing more. That usage is exactly what the Cowboys need on this roster — a homerun threat that can stretch defenses and open up the middle of the field for Lamb and Dalton Schultz.
One thing in the NFL you can’t teach is speed and Agholor has plenty of it. That speed would be a beneficial addition to a Cowboys receiver group that lacks it. His price may not be too costly either as he’s currently fighting for a roster spot in New England.
Plus, given how much the Patriots like late-round picks, it could be a deal the Cowboys are interested in.
