3 thinnest positions on the Cowboys roster in 2022
By Randy Gurzi
1. Tight End
For years, the Cowboys didn’t have to worry about the tight end position. Sure, they had some talented players come through, including Anthony Fasano and Martellus Bennett, but they always knew Jason Witten was the only one they needed.
Witten was an iron man who simply did his job and rarely dropped passes. Then, when he left, Dallas was left trying to figure out what to do next. It appeared as though Blake Jarwin would be their guy, but when he tore his ACL in Week 1 of the 2020 season, Dalton Schultz stepped up.
The former Stanford Cardinal recorded 63 receptions for 615 yards that year and added 78 more catches for 808 yards in 2021. He was then scheduled for free agency, but the Cowboys hit him with the franchise tag, keeping him in town for at least one more season.

It’s a good thing they did this, too, because their depth behind Schultz isn’t exactly inspiring. Right now, they have Jeremy Sprinkle, Sean McKeon, and rookie Jake Ferguson battling for spots on the roster.
Sprinkle was in Dallas last season and played in a blocking role primarily. He did have three receptions for 31 yards, but hasn’t had a touchdown since 2019 with Washington. McKeon is a former undrafted free agent out of Michigan who had no stats as a rookie in 2020 and recorded just four catches for 27 yards in 2021 — although he did haul in one touchdown pass.
Still, there’s not much behind Schultz to get too excited about, making this another thin position for Dallas.
