Predicting which of the Cowboys 2023 free agents will stay or go
By Randy Gurzi
Noah Brown, WR
A seventh-round pick in 2017 out of Ohio State, Noah Brown has been praised for his ability as a blocker in the run game since joining the Cowboys. He’s a big-bodied wideout at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds and has been slowly getting more involved in the passing game over the past two seasons.
Brown had 14 receptions for 154 yards in 2020 and followed that up with another 16 catches for 184 yards. He has yet to score a touchdown in a regular season game but the coaching staff likes him enough that he was retained in each of the past two offseasons via one-year deals.
Looking ahead to 2023, the Cowboys might be ready to fill the bottom of the receiver corps with younger talent, meaning Brown could be done following this year.
Prediction: Leaves in free agency
James Washington, WR
After landing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, James Washington has struggled to find much success. He did record 44 receptions for 735 yards in his second season but hasn’t come close to that output since.
Once his rookie deal was up, he headed to Dallas and is going to try and replace the role Cedrick Wilson played for them. Washington does have talent and can get deep but he’s already behind due to a foot injury and feels more like a one-year rental while they groom Jalen Tolbert rather than a long-term solution.
Prediction: Leaves in free agency
