After winning the NFC East in 2021, the Dallas Cowboys are again favorites to stand atop the division this coming season as well. The main reason for this has as much to do with their talent as it does with those around them.

The New York Giants are starting to rebuild under Brian Daboll and the Washington Commanders are banking on Carson Wentz — meaning neither of them is perceived as a threat this season. The Philadelphia Eagles are the closest competitor but they still have a ways to go to prove they can be consistent winners.

This doesn’t mean that the Cowboys are locks to win the division back-to-back. It also doesn’t mean their roster is without flaws. In fact, there are a few players being overrated by either the coaching staff or fans, and here are the three main culprits.

When the Cowboys added Terence Steele as an undrafted free agent in 2020, he was considered a raw prospect with the athleticism to develop into a starter down the road. Unfortunately, he was relied upon far too quickly.

Dallas had to start him in 14 games as a rookie, and in 2021, he had another 13 starts. He was better than expected but the coaching staff has suddenly decided that he’s ready to take over as the right tackle.

After La’el Collins was suspended for five games in 2021, Mike McCarthy continued to play Steele and then rotated the two in and out of the lineup at times. Once the season was over, they released Collins and now Steele is the de facto starter in his place.

Perhaps he rises to the occasion but right now, it looks as though this staff is overvaluing what they have in this young man.
