With two months to go until the Dallas Cowboys season, all we can do is hope and pray that this is the year the Cowboys get further in the postseason and prove their doubters wrong. A lot has changed both throughout the league and on Dallas’s roster since January. The reports from OTAs and minicamp have been positive, but there’s no real way to know how this team will do once the season starts, especially with a lot of new faces joining the squad.

All of that being said, Cowboys Nation can still dream! Knowing what we know now and hoping for the best, we wanted to list out some dream scenarios for Dallas in this upcoming season. We know that winning the Super Bowl is obviously the biggest wish, but we tried to keep it a bit more realistic.

4. Jake Ferguson Has A Great Rookie Campaign

Obviously, we want every player to do well in 2022. But a lot of the Cowboys’ future (and money) is riding on Jake Ferguson’s success. The rookie tight end from Wisconsin has earned himself high praise during offseason programming so far, and the coaches seem to have a lot of faith in his ability to be a receiving threat and great blocker.

Not only would Ferguson performing well mean additional reliable targets for Dak Prescott with many WR question marks in the air, but it would also help the Cowboys’ 2023 salary cap.

Right now, current TE1 Dalton Schultz is on the franchise tag. Although Schultz has openly expressed that he wants a long-term deal in Dallas (even sitting out OTAs to prove a point), reports are still saying that an extension between the two sides is not close.

With only two weeks until the deadline to sign Schultz to a longer deal, the likelihood is that the tight end will remain on the tag. If Ferguson doesn’t sell himself as a standout, the front office will be forced to either put Schultz on a franchise tag again in 2023 (which will have an increased price) or sign him to a long-term deal. With the current market for tight ends and wide receivers growing by the day, the starter will likely be worth a lot of money next season if he has similar stats to 2021.

However, if Ferguson proves himself to be a solid tight end, the Cowboys could potentially avoid signing Schultz and keep Ferguson on his affordable rookie contract. The rookie performing well would be a win all around.
