2. Fletcher Cox, DT, Philadelphia Eagles

Look. We know that Fletcher Cox is a 6x Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champ. But the defensive tackle hasn’t been that player in years. Last season, he had his lowest sack total since 2013. While he is certainly a leader and a longstanding favorite amongst Eagles fans, the reality is that he is currently being wildly overpaid for what he is.

After being released by the team, the Eagles decided to re-sign him to a one-year deal worth $14 million. How can you give out a contract that big for a guy who hasn’t been his best self since 2018? Even though Cox earned himself a Pro Bowl nod in 2020, it was likely due to his notoriety rather than his actual stats and performance on the field.

While he is certainly an important member of the roster in terms of longevity, he has shown clear signs of deterioration. Howie Roseman is making a purely emotional decision by keeping Cox around. It’s not that he doesn’t deserve to be there, but his current level of play certainly doesn’t feel worth $14 million. It’s likely that if Philly didn’t re-sign him, he would not have gotten an offer anywhere near that amount for his services.

The 31-year-old spent most of his career as the second-best behind Aaron Donald. He’s also shown outward laziness, frustration, and a quitting attitude during games, which is not the kind of thing you want to see from anyone.

Cox will likely end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but today, he certainly isn’t worth what he’s making.
