The NFL offseason is almost over, but analysts and experts are still suggesting that teams make some final moves to help improve their rosters before it’s too late. The Dallas Cowboys have added very few external names to the squad this offseason, bringing in only James Washington, Dante Fowler Jr., and Ryan Nall. Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones has long promised more movement in free agency, but do we think that will actually happen?

If it does, Bleacher Report has one specific suggestion. In an article where Ian Wharton listed one trade that all 32 teams should make before training camp begins in mid-July, Wharton said the Cowboys should consider trading for Baltimore Ravens safety Chuck Clark. The exact scenario laid out is Clark in exchange for a 2023 fourth-round pick.

To be honest, this suggestion doesn’t seem like a top priority. While safety depth is always important, if the Cowboys have solidified any position this offseason, it would be safety. They re-signed both Malik Hooker and Jayron Kearse in addition to adding some UDFA options. Meanwhile, the running back, linebacker, defensive end, and offensive line units could use some serious help heading into 2022.

That aside, let’s see what Clark could bring to the table.

Bleacher Report says the Cowboys should trade the Ravens for safety Chuck Clark before training camp

Clark is a former sixth-round pick out of Virginia Tech who has spent the last five years in Baltimore. Although he only started two total games in his first two seasons, he started 14, then 16, and 16 again in his last three. In 2021, Clark had two interceptions, one sack, 80 tackles, and three tackles for loss.

After the Ravens chose to sign Marcus Williams to a five-year, $70 million contract and drafted  Kyle Hamilton with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, you’d think they feel pretty set on the position. Clark himself even posted a cryptic tweet about the uncertainty of his situation in Baltimore.

Wharton is viewing Kearse as a “versatile defender,” which makes me believe he thinks the Cowboys need Clark to help with a permanent safety role. I’m not sure that’s the case, but he also cited the fact that Keanu Neal and Damontae Kazee also parted ways with Dallas in free agency. Here’s more of Wharton’s explanation:

"Clark is set to receive a new contract after this season and would surely rather be in a situation where he can build value and cash in. Clark and Kearse offer well-rounded skill sets that give defensive coordinator Dan Quinn more flexibility when moving each around. Both can cover tight ends in the slot, attack the line of scrimmage and functionally play two-high shells. Hooker would be relied upon more to play the ball and produce turnovers."

Is this a move the Cowboys need to make? And, even if it is, will the Joneses be willing to make any actual movements outside of the organization?
