4 takeaways from the Cowboys’ OTAs and minicamp practices
3. Cowboys found their kicker
Have the Cowboys found their kicker in Garibay? We won’t be sure until the season begins and we get to see him live in action, but all reports so far say he’s been solid in his attempts in practice. The same can’t be said for former Cowboys kicker Greg Zuerlein who’s struggling right now in a battle for the kicking job at the New York Jets minicamp.
Dallas seems to have gotten lucky after the Jets swooped in and signed Zuerlein who the Cowboys intended to bring back on a cheaper deal. Even though the front office waited until after the draft to pick up a kicker, Garibay seems to be a solid choice.
During practice, the Texas Tech product has been able to show off his big leg making field goal attempts from 50-yards or more. This is a good sign for a team that seems to take risks in games by trying to convert those long kicks. Hopefully, he will be able to keep that consistency going into the season and beyond for America’s Team, a team that over the last two seasons crossed their fingers on every attempted field goal and extra point tried by Zuerlein.
